  • Mercury was hard because it is so close to the
    sun
  • In 1974, the spacecraft Mariner 10 was sent to
    Mercury

    side of Mercury
  • The pictures revealed that Mercury is similar to
    Earths moon
  • But, we still know less about Mercury than any
    other planet except Pluto

  • These clouds keep scientists from seeing the
    surface of Venus
  • Then in 1978, the Venus orbiter Pioneer was able
    to take pictures

    large volcano-like mountains, and flat lowlands
  • Later Venus was studies by Magellan spacecraft
  • It reached Venus on August 10, 1999

    covered by rocks and ash from volcanoes
  • The surface did not show wind erosion
  • Vikings 1 and 2 were the spacecrafts sent to Mars

  • But they did find tiny amounts of water vapor
  • 21 years later, the spacecraft Pathfinder landed
    on Mars
  • There were new findings

  • What scientists thought to be old river beds may
