National School Lunch Program
  • Established in 1946.
  • As a measure of national security, to safeguard
    the health and well-being of the nations
    children.
  • (Gunderson, 1971)
  • Federally subsidized meal programs have since
    expanded to include school breakfast as well as
    after-school and summer options.

School Breakfast Program
  • Piloted in 1966
  • Done in areas where children had long bus rides
    and regions with many working mothers
  • In 1975 it became a permanent entitlement program
  • Omaha Public Schools introduced complimentary
    breakfast in 1997
  • Different schools were slowly phased in

Reality
  • 31 million students participated in the National
    School Lunch Program in 2007-2008
  • 18 million are from low income families
  • Only ½ of low income students participate in the
    breakfast program
  • 1 in 6 participate in summer nutrition programs

Missing Breakfast
  • Children who skip breakfast are less able to
    distinguish among similar images, show increased
    errors, and have slower memory recall
  • Children experiencing hunger have lower math
    scores and are more likely to have to repeat a
    grade
  • Children that are undernourished are more likely
    to be suspended and have difficulty getting along
    with other children

  • Perform better on standardized tests
  • Improve their speed and memory in cognitive tests
  • Have better math grades, attendance, and
    punctuality
  • Perform better on mental tasks and respond better
    to frustration

School Breakfasts Move From Cafeteria to Class
  • In an effort to increase participation in school
    breakfast programs and nurture academic success,
    a new initiative is moving meals from the
    cafeteria to an educational environment students
    know best the classroom (Anderson 2011)

  • Its a new way of serving breakfast to students
    to ensure they begin the day with a healthy meal
  • It is a way to increase participation in the
    breakfast program
  • It is a way to get the day started more quickly,
    calmly, and productively

  • Schools that provide breakfast in the classroom
    show a decrease in tardiness and suspensions as
    well as improved behavior and attentiveness
  • Schools that provide a universal school breakfast
    have higher breakfast participation, especially
    when it is served in the classroom.
  • Schools providing all students with free
    breakfast have greater positive changes in
    academic performance.

    report decreases in discipline and psychological
    problems, visits to school nurses, tardiness,
    increases in student attentiveness and
    attendance, and generally better learning
    environment

    more relaxed start to the day

  • Students arrive at school for breakfast. They
    get in line and grab their to go bag

  • When students are finished with breakfast, they
    throw away any left over food and recycle all
    other materials

Menu
  • The Grab and Go Breakfast program offers the same
    menu options, with a few slight adjustments, as
    all other Omaha Public Schools
  • Hot options are prepackaged or put in a sleeve to
    make travel to the classrooms handy

Teacher Expectations
  • Greet students in the hall before they arrive in
    the classroom in the morning
  • Allow students time to eat their breakfast
  • Teach students the rules of the program
  • Call engineer if spills occur

Concerns for the Program
  • Spills are cleaned up immediately by the engineer
  • Trash is recycled in bins in the hallway
  • Students are able to begin their work immediately
    when finished eating or not participating in the
    program
  • Cleaning supplies are available in each classroom
  • Students are taught classroom expectations for
    the Grab and Go breakfast program
