    programme (Session 1)

    the mentor (Workshop 1)
  • 11.00-11.30am Coffee
  • 11.30-12.00pm Programme aims, outcomes , content
    and assessment (Workshop 1)
  • 12.00-12.30pm Learning Styles (Workshop 2)
  • 12.30-1.00pm Lunch
  • 1.00- 2.00 pm Facilitating leaning in the
    clinical environment (Session 2)
  • 2.00 -3.00pm The students journey (Workshop 3)
  • 3.00-3.45pm Mentors Portfolio of Evidence

The Code Standards of conduct performance and
ethics for nurses and midwives (May 2008)
  • Work with others to protect and promote the
    health and wellbeing of those in your care, their
    families and carers and the wider community
  • Share information with your colleagues
  • Work with them to monitor the quality of your
    work and maintain safety of those in your care
  • You must facilitate students and others to
    develop their competencies

NMC criteria for mentors
  • Be registered on same part of register
  • Registered for a minimum of 1 year
  • Successfully completed NMC approved mentor
    preparation programme
  • Ability to select, support and assess a range of
    learning opportunities
  • Able to support learning in interprofessional
    environments for students from other professions
  • Contribute to assessment of other professionals
    under supervision of an experienced assessor from
    that profession
  • Make judgements about competency / proficiency
    and be accountable for such decisions
  • Be able to support registrants in meeting CPD
    needs as specified by the NMC Code

Responsibilities of Trusts / Independent Sector
40 of students time spent being supervised
directly or indirectly by a mentor/practice
teacher who must record this time. Time with
student to engage in learning activities Final
period of practice learning - one hour per week

Sign-Off Mentor
  • Sign-Off Mentors must demonstrate additional
    competence
  • Supervised on 3 occasions
  • Clinical currency
  • Understand accountability
  • Knowledge of programme requirements
  • Understanding of NMC requirements
  • Placement providers will determine when above is
    met and annotate on the register
