Schools for expatriates /foreigners International
school schools using international curriculum
such as Cambridge, Oxford, Baccalaureate,
etc. SBI schools are mandated by Educational act
no.20/2003,and government regulation no.19/2005
SBI applies the national standard of education
x (intensification, remedial teaching,
acceleration, additional lesson) SBI the use of
English to teach math and science. The goal is to
have graduates with international standards.

  • In reality in cities like Malang and Yogya, there
    have been 5 to 7 junior high schools and senior
    high schools developed as RSBI.
  • We can predict that the number will increase in
    the future.

    get RSBI

  • Hard to recruit good teachers of science and math
    who have sufficient command of English to teach
    math and science.
  • Hard to prepare students to be able to learn math
    and science in English.
  • Hard to develop good instructional materials of
    math and science in English.
  • The English proficiency of the English and the
    math and science teachers in TOEFLs score
    (ranging from 300-400), far from 500 as the
    minimal requirements.
  • The schools which have implemented the RSBI
    curriculum (SSNX) in the last 3 years fail to
    show signs of success.
  • These are some pessimistic tendencies to RSBI
    schools.

What does ESP mean ? Why do we teach Math and
Science in English in SBI schools ? What is
expected from the students of these schools
? What level of English is required ? How can we
realistically do this ? Linking some theories,
research, policy , and practice to implement a
bilingual program and train teachers to teach
math and science in English in the high schools.
There are some benefits, challenges, hopes ,
pessimistic /optimistic tendencies ,and some
perceptions for the management, the teachers, the
students , and everybody else. Whatever happens
we have to change to stay the same.
