How does a civilization come to be? Every
Civilization has to start somewhere, but why in a
certain place and how? Does it just miraculously
appear one day? Suppose you and your classmates
were suddenly stranded on an island with no way
to get off and probably no hope of being rescued.
What would you do? So, Lets begin our journey
into a new civilization, your civilization
called, Gilligans Island. The Scenario
begins with
Click on the ship to begin.
4Each team used the following questions to guide
them.
- Group Discussion Scenario Questions
- What were the most important problems to solve
first? Why were these problems the most
important? - Would rules and laws have been important on the
island? Why or why not? - Suppose one of the people in the group was a
really wonderful artist. When do you think that
person would have had opportunities to really use
her talentsnear the beginning, or later? Why? - Lets share what each team came up with and as a
group, decide on the best way to proceed.
So, in the beginning of a new civilization would
you call yourself, Gilligans Settlement or
Gilligans Civilization? Why or why not? Is
there a difference between the two? What does a
civilization have that a new settlement does not?
5Whole Group List on board Please tell me
everything that comes to your mind when you hear
the word CIVILIZATION. Remember to think in
terms of (Prior Knowledge-Connections-and
Questions) Civilization Please take out your
journals and write down the word
Civilization-Settlement-Surplus- and Division of
Labor What do these words mean and how do they
relate to the word civilization?
Definitions A civilization is a large community
of people who live and work in a place and have a
government to make laws for the group and
organizations for education and other social
purposes. A civilization usually also has a
system of writing and advanced arts and
sciences. A settlement is a permanent place of
living for a group of people. A surplus is having
more than you need of something. When you have a
division of labor it means that you have a
separation of different jobs among different
people in a group. Different people in a
community do different jobs.
6- The Ancient Egyptians developed a settlement on
the banks of the - Nile River. At first they had to tend to the
basic needs of the - People. They made sure that everyone had food,
water, shelter, - and clothing. As this group of people grew bigger
things began to - change. There system for growing and hunting
food was perfected, - (Surplus). This freed people up to do other
things. - What other kinds of jobs do you think people
began to have? - (Division of Labor)
- Think about our brainstorming session with the
word Civilization. - In what order do you think these added jobs would
have happened? - Lets gather some information about Ancient
Egypts Civilization. - I put together a list of questions under a
category for you to - answer. I also made a website with a hotlist of
sites for you to use to - answer those questions.
