Title: The Remnant

1
The Remnant
Romans Chapters 9-11
2
  • How is it that most Jewish people had rejected
    the gospel?
  • How can the Bible be the truth when so many
    people reject it?
  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with the
gospel, ...it is the power of God for salvation
to everyone who believes (Romans 116).

3
  • God had not rejected the Jewish people Romans
    111
  • God never issued unconditional promises to anyone
    Romans 117
  • Any Jew could be saved on same condition as
    Gentiles Romans 1123
  • Being related to Abraham not automatic ticket to
    heaven- Romans 96,7

4
Elijah and the Remnant Romans 112-4
  • God has not cast away His people whom He
foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture
says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against
Israel, saying, 3 "LORD, they have killed Your
prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone
am left, and they seek my life"? 4 But what does
the divine response say to him? "I have reserved
for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed
    the knee to Baal."

5
What is the Divine Response?
  • Elijah was discouraged, God wasnt.
  • He does not focus on the unfaithful many, but He
seems extremely happy and satisfied with the
    faithful few.
  • No mention is made of changing the message or
lowering the spiritual standard so more will
    qualify.
  • 1 Kings 1915 The Lord said to him, Go, return
on your way... and when you have arrived anoint
    Hazael
  • God does not allow Elijah to give up, and neither
    does God pity him.
  • God will Always Have His Faithful Remnant!

6
The Remnant in the Old Testament
  • After the death of Abel and the apostasy of Cain,
Seth and his descendants are the remnant Genesis
    426
  • During the time of the flood, Noah and his family
    are the remnant Genesis 68
  • After the Exodus, Joshua and Caleb stand out as
the true believers among many unbelievers
    Numbers 1330 146-9 1424
  • Among the corrupt sons of Eli at the Tabernacle,
Samuel serves as part of the remnant 1 Samuel
    225,26

7
  • Hezekiah and Josiah were part of the remnant in
    their time 2 Chronicles 3120 3433
  • Times when remnant refers to small percentage
of Israel would actually return from captivity,
other times has Messianic New Testament
    applications- Isaiah 1111
  • When Jesus was in the flesh, men like Nathanael
and the other apostles were part of the remnant-
    John 147

8
  • at this present time there is a remnant
according to the election of grace. -- Romans
    115
  • Not only did a remnant exist in the Old
Testament, but the Holy Spirit argues that in the
First Century this remnant still existed and will
    always exist.

9
Conditions For Being Part Of The Remnant
  • Gods grace Romans 115
  • Not based on simply being related to the right
    person.
  • Isnt something that can be purchased,
grandfathered in, inherited from parents, or
earned by doing humanly devised good deeds.
  • No one deserves to be part of the remnant.
  • Romans 11 - unbelief cut off the physical
descendants of Abraham from being in the remnant

10
  • An obedient faith Romans 1123
  • 1. for obedience to the faith among all nations
    for His name. (Romans 15)
  • 2. The just shall live by faith (Romans 117).
  • 3. To those who by patient continuance in doing
    good (Romans 27).
  • 4. obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
    Romans 617,18
  • 5. present your bodies a living sacrifice
    Romans 121
  • 6. obedience to the faith Romans 1626
  • 7. Joshua and Caleb followed God fully (Numbers
    1424).

11
Applications
  • Quality is Valued over Mere Quantity
  • Only eight righteous people at the time of the
flood, yet He did not change His message or
lower the bar, and neither did He admit failure
    or defeat He brought judgment.
  • Only a handful of men who stood up and believed
when Israel was offered the land, and yet God did
    not move from His position.
  • God had 7000 during the time of Elijah, and He
did not say, I have only 7000.
  • When Christ came to the earth, He clearly said
the few were on the path to salvation and the
many on the path to destruction (Matthew
    713,14).

12
  • Unfaithfulness Does Not Prevent God From
    Rejoicing In The Faithful
  • Though God grieves over the lost (Genesis 66)
and is patiently waiting for all to repent (2
Peter 39), at the same time, the lost do not
prevent God from rejoicing in His faithful few.
  • Jesus proceeded to use and work with a handful of
    faithful disciples.
  • Will I be part of the Remnant in my generation?
  • Choice that has been presented to every
generation in the past is still being presented
    to our generation.
  • Which path will I choose?

13
The Remnant Always Exists
  • What about our generation?
  • Will we be marked by indifference, hostility,
compromise, or will we be noted for our
    conviction?
