Title: Climate Change and Renewable Heat; The Importance of Biomass

2
Climate Change The Facts
  • Climate change is a long-term shift in the
    climate
  • Our climate is changing at a rate faster than
what we have experienced in all of human history
  • By burning fossil fuels for electricity and other
industries we are releasing billions of tons of
carbon dioxide and changing the climate
  • Carbon dioxide acts like a blanket, trapping the
    suns heat around the planet

3
Climate ChangeWe can reduce our carbon dioxide
emissions and slow the rate of change
  • AES Drax in Yorkshire is a coal-fired power plant
emits 22.8 million tonnes ofCO2 annually more
    than the 100 least-industrialised nations
    combined
  • It provides 7 of Britains electrical power
  • Burning fossil fuels to turn steam turbines and
create electricity accounts for a quarter of the
worlds greenhouse gas emissions, and coal has
the highest carbon content of all fuels

4
Policy
  • The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 sets a
target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at
    least 80 by 2050
  • The Act also sets an interim target of a
reduction of at least 42 by 2020

5
Heat
  • Need to decarbonise heat as it accounts for 47
of UKs carbon dioxide emissions and 60 of
    average domestic energy bills
  • (Source Heat and Energy Saving Strategy, DECC
    (2009)

6
Renewables
  • The Renewables Action Plan identifies options to
ensure at least 20 of Scotland's energy comes
    from renewables by 2020

7
What is Renewable Heat?
  • Biomass
  • Heat Pumps (ground, air or water source)
  • Waste biomass and anaerobic digestion (including
    biogas)
  • Solar heating
  • Geothermal heat

8
Renewable Heat
  • Security of energy supply
  • Maximising economic opportunities up to half a
million additional jobs might be created in the
UK renewables sector and its supply chains.

9
Renewable Heat
  • Renewable heat is massively under utilised

10
Why Woodfuel?
  • Economically attractive how much will it cost
to heat an average 3 bedroomed house?

11
Renewable Heat Incentive
  • Financial support will
  • Increase access to renewable heat
  • Expand supply chain and market
  • Help bring down costs
