Rotary International

• In June 2007, the Board of Directors approved the
  RI Strategic Plan 2007-10, which identifies seven
  priorities
• Eradicate polio.
• Advance the internal and external recognition and
  public image of Rotary. 
• Increase Rotarys capacity to provide service to
  others. 
• Expand membership globally in both numbers and
  quality.
• Emphasize Rotarys unique vocational service
  commitment.
• Optimize the use and development of leadership
  talents within RI.
• Fully implement the strategic planning process to
  ensure continuity and consistency throughout the
  organization.

PolioPlus

• Contribute to Rotary's 200 Million Challenge
• Rotary's US200 Million Challenge is the Rotary
  Foundation's response to the two grants totaling
  355 million from the Bill Melinda Gates
  Foundation to help eradicate polio. Every dollar
  given to PolioPlus will be counted toward the
  200 million match, which must be completed by 30
  June 2012.

Facts about Polio

• Was the AIDS of its time
• Vaccine developed in 1955
• Remains endemic in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan,
  and Nigeria
• Outbreaks occur in other areas that were
  previously polio-free
• March of Dimes started in 1937

Franklin Roosevelt is on the USA dime because of
his fundraising efforts for the development of a
vaccine for polio

• Maximum 2000 per club each year from District
• Rotary International Grants
• Match of dollars committed by Rotary Clubs
• Min. 5000 USD (total project min. 10,000 USD)
• Currently 2009-2010 RI funds have been committed

Belize Literacy Program 1,000 4 year scholarship for 3 high school students in Belize ran through Vegreville Club
Bolivian Canadian Water Network 4,000 Supply low cost small scale water solutions in Bolivia. Usually this means biosand water filters
Agape Orphanage in Malawi 3,000 Orphanage takes in children, many of which are affected by AIDS, from surrounding area and provides care, education, etc.
Chalabana Community School, Zambia 3,000 VSDAS (Village School Development and Aid Society) is building a school in Chalabana, Zambia

Belize Literacy Program

• Goal - to bring updated curriculum, technology,
  and training to the Belizean education system
• First project of its kind other districts are
  watching to see if it works and can be duplicated
• 60 population under 24
• Annual budget/goal of 60,000 (depending on
  support of clubs)

• Our 2008-2009 support went to a scholarship
  program ran by Vegreville Rotary Club (ancillary
  project)
• This year 1,000 will be directed to District
  Project as our clubs contribution

Bolivian-Canadian Clean Water Network

• Goal - to improve health of impoverished
  Bolivians through access to safe drinking water
  and hygiene education
• Biosand filters
• are a well known water treatment method developed
  in Canada
• There are over 75,000 in use worldwide
• Last years budget was 40,000

Agape Orphanage

• Goal - to give Malawian orphans, many due to
  AIDS, a nurturing home and a chance through
  education
• Started in 2002 by Diane Block from Stony Plain
• Annual budget of 80,000

  improving sustainability of orphanage and finding

Chalabana Community School

• Goal build a school through a partnership with
  VSDAS (Village School Development and Aid
  Society)
• VSDAS mandate is to relief poverty through
  education and micro-projects in Zambia
• In Zambia no school means no trained teachers and
  high dropout rates, especially for women
• Option to
• provide ongoing aid to a 3rd world community
  (adopt a community)
• go to Zambia and build the school

• Investigate future Friendship Exchange with

Challenges

• RI matching grants require a minimum of 5,000USD
• If all possibilities for grantable projects work
  out we need to (a) increase future budgets or (b)
  get other clubs on board
• We have a lot of small projects, which requires a
  lot of manpower
• Need to leave club some future flexibility
