Melanie Hunt Director, Learning Skills
2
Ofsted our purpose
  • We will raise standards and improve lives by
  • serving children and learners
  • encouraging services to improve
  • securing value for money

3
Sustainable Development at Ofsted
  • Sustainable Development Plan (July 2008)
  • Ofsted will ensure that we evaluate the
contribution that providers are making to a
sustainable future. This will be through
inspection, ensuring our frameworks take account
of sustainable development through guidance and
training for inspectors and encouraging providers
to consider sustainable development in their own
    self assessment.

4
Ofsted Inspectsour new single framework
  • Principles of inspection
  • Support and promote improvement
  • Be proportionate
  • Focus on the needs of users
  • Focus on the needs of providers
  • Be transparent and consistent
  • Be accountable
  • Demonstrate value for money

5
An integrated approach to judging sustainable
development
  • Integrated within the inspection framework and
    referenced across the report
  • Raises profile and status of sustainable
development without adding to the burden of
    inspection
  • Encourages inclusion of sustainable development
    considerations within self assessment
  • Inspectors can use existing inspection processes
to gather evidence and evaluate progress in
    sustainable development
  • Training for inspectors

Integrating sustainable development
  • Outcomes for learners

enable them to make informed choices about their
    health and well-being
  • learners are involved in additional activities
and projects and make a positive contribution to
the wider community and its sustainability
  • learners develop skills, knowledge and
    understanding relevant to community cohesion

8
Integrating sustainable development
  • Quality of provision
  • the provider considers employers views and
identified training needs and information on
    performance, skills and labour demand
  • the range and content of learning
    programmes/services are relevant to local
    communities in that
  • the provider helps ensure coherence ofprovision,
minimising duplication with other local providers
  • the provider promotes social inclusion
  • the provider promotes sustainable development
  • enrichment activities / extended services,
    including work experience, contribute to
learners enjoyment and achievement, and their
personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural
    development

  • Colleges and providers should model effective
    practice in sustainable development
  • Action point Do your self-assessment processes
take sufficient account of the promotion of
education for sustainable development, as well as
your own contribution to sustainability e.g.
through the design of curriculum and
