What is a Periodic Table?

  • Very reactive metals, do not occur freely in
    nature.
  • Such metals are soft, malleable, ductile, good
    conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Malleable - can be beaten into thin sheets.
  • Ductile - can be stretched into wire.
  • Possess metallic luster.
  • Solid at room temperature (except Hg).
  • Examples Lithium, sodium, potassium, copper,
    mercury

  • Present in Group 14, 15, 16
  • Exist in room temperature as gases (Oxygen) and
    solids (Carbon).
  • Very brittle-if a solid
  • cannot be rolled into wires (Nonductile).
  • Cannot be pounded into sheets
  • Cannot conduct heat and electricity, do not
    reflect light.
  • Do not possess metallic luster.
  • E.g Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Oxygen

  • Present in Group 18 of the periodic table.
  • Very low reactivity
  • colorless, odorless, tasteless
  • This group has lots of uses.
  • E.g helium, neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon.
