Title: Back to school traffic safety
1Back to school traffic safety According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Association
(NHTSA), 28 percent of all pedestrians injured in
traffic crashes in 2005 were 15 or younger. With
more than 750,000 K-12 students returning to
schools all over Colorado, motorists will see an
increase in children crossing streets, riding
bikes and boarding school buses. Motorists
should be extra attentive this time of year,
staying on the lookout for children during their
daily commute. Discuss the use of crosswalks
with your children and why its safer to cross at
some corners rather than others. Teach your
children that its important to cooperate with
police, school safety patrols and adult crossing
guards. Teach your children to stop, listen and
look for approaching and turning
vehicles. Colorado law requires all traffic,
both oncoming and following, to stop for a school
bus loading or unloading passengers when the bus
stop sign is extended and its red flashers are on.
