• Because Washington had spread his forces too thin

• Recovering from defeat at New York, Washington
  launches a surprise attack
• Does this to boost recruitment
• Boost morale of the Army
• Attacks the Hessians the day after Christmas
• Forces them to surrender

• British react swiftly to the attack at Trenton
• Send General Cornwallis to pursue Washington
• Washington wins the battle at Princeton

• British angered by losses at Trenton and
  Princeton, seek to control the Hudson River
  Valley
• October 17, 1777, Continental Army defeats and
  causes British to surrender
• Major turning point
• Showed foreign countries that America might
  possibly win
• Results in the Treaty of Alliance with the French

• This will weaken the British control in the Ohio
  River Valley
