Title: UPDATE ON KENYA Conservation through wealth creation
1UPDATE ON KENYAConservation through wealth
creation
Africa Conservation Trust
2Update on conservation activities in Kenya
- Magadi Area
- The first area in Magadi was found to be
unsuitable for our process because there were no
easily developed dam sites, and geotechnical
indications were that if we sank a borehole in
this area the water would have a very high soda
content, so we have been looking for a more
favorable location in this Magadi area.
3First location in Magadi
4Second Location, Magadi Area
- The second location in the Magadi area is on the
Uaso Nyiro River, near the Shompoli Conservation
Area, and being on the river which never dries
up, will be an ideal location for a tree nursery,
demonstration area and community training
facility . - The engagement has begun with the CBO in this
area, and we have employed a representative from
this community to move the process forwards
towards a start up date in the last quarter of
2007. The proximity of water will enable this
project to be of a much greater magnitude than
possible in the first location.
5Second Location ,Magadi Area
6Eastern Aberdares, Kandara
- We moved our operations to the Eastern Aberdares,
from Gatamayu in the south, to Kandara at the
request of the Tana and Athi River Development
Authority, because it is the catchments area for
the Tana and Athi Rivers, two of Kenyas largest
rivers, and source of all our hydro power,
therefore a very important location for us to
attend to as a matter of priority.
7Engaging with the Kandara community
8Choosing a location for the nursery in Kandara
9Kandara nursery 5 months later with many
thousands of trees

11Lake Victoria
We have a project location identified on the
shores of Lake Victoria, where rivers have dried
up as a result of deforestation, resulting in the
lake level dropping 1,5 meters in the last
decade. It is intended to start a regional
intervention from this location that would
involve Tanzania and Uganda.
12Consequences of deforestation and over grazing
Gulley erosion around the lake as a result of
environmental degradation is becoming more
frequent and increasingly damaging, as seen in
this photograph taken in the Homa Bay area. Our
nitrogen fixing trees are perfectly suited to
restoring and stabilizing degraded soils .
13Tana River area survey by air and ground
Intrusion of people into virgin forest areas near
the delta area of the Tana River, practicing
destructive slash and burn agriculture
14On the ground north of Garsen, Tana River
Secondary bush and no grazing were evident for
many miles between Garsen and Hola.
15Residents of the lower Tana
The Pokomo and Orma people of this region live in
classic bee hive huts, and have suffered
considerably from the devastating drought of
2005.
Our village transformation scheme would give them
valuable resources to survive the effects of
Global climate change.
16Carbon credit assessment
- We are actively assessing our carbon credit
generation potential, both for communities and
for commercial forestry, to enhance Africas
potential to be one of the worlds largest carbon
sinks. - This year, 2007, will see the expansion of the
Trusts activities into new areas with new
communities.
17In conclusion
- The Africa Conservation Trust is perfectly placed
in terms of the right programs at the right time
to generate sustainable rural development from
conservation through wealth creation. - Please visit our website
