Title: FORMING OF REINFORCEMENT PLASTIC

1
FORMING OF REINFORCEMENT PLASTIC
  • For the manufacturing of a component from a
reinforced plastic, the forming process does more
than shaping, it also positions the reinforcing
    particles and fix orientation.

2
PULTRUSION
  • Continuous fibre roving are handled through a
bath of resin and then through a shaping die. The
resin then cross-links and hardness, producing a
long prismatic component with fibre aligned
uniaxially parallel to its long axis.

3
FILAMENT WINDING
  • Continuous fibre roving are pulled through a bath
of resin and are then wound on to a driven
mandrel. A tubular component results when the
resin hardened and the mandrel is withdrawn.
  • The fibers are in an angle-ply arrangement.
  • The process used for producing pipes and
    cylindrical vessels.
  • Other winding geometries can be produced also,
either uniaxially or more complex fibre
    arrangements.

4
HAND LAY-UP
  • Fiber reinforcement is laid down by hand in the
required arrangement and shape and resin is
    applied with a brush
  • Reinforcement can be in the form of roving, a
woven roving fabric, or a mat of randomly
    arranged chopped fibers.
  • This method is very versatile but labor intensive
  • Used for short production runs. Ex. Building of
    small boats.

5
HAND SPRAY-UP
  • Roving are fed to a spray gun, which chops the
fibers and the sprays them at the panel where
    reinforcement is needed.
  • Resin is also applied with a brush
  • Fibers are arranged randomly in the panel

6
COMPRESSION MOULDING
  • Fibre and resin are premixed and additives are
added. Prior to compression moulding in a heated
mould which triggers the hardening of the resin.
  • Many forms of premix are available, making a
    variety of fibre arrangements possible.

7
REINFORCED REACTION INJECTION MOULDING (RRIM)
  • Liquid precursors are mixed (one of them already
    containing short fibers.
  • Liquid is injected into a close mould.
  • Fibers arrangement are influenced by the flow of
    the simultaneously cross linking polymer.
  • The arrangement is random in three dimension

8
REINFORCED THERMOPLASTICS
  • Forming is carried out using the normal process
    of extrusion or injection moulding
  • Alignment of the reinforcement is caused by drag
exerted on the particles by the flowing viscous
    polymer melt.
  • Damage is done to reinforcing particles during
    passage through the thermoplastic compounding
ex. Fibre length reduced to 0.5 mm. Platelet also
    breakdown to 50?m.
