Fugitive Pieces and To Mary
  • Lived with his mother First
    major work- at Burgage Manor in
    Fugitive Pieces Southwell.
    Was burned on
    the
    advice of his friend.
    (Particularly because of the poem To Mary)
    Rack'd by the flames of jealous rage,
  • By all her torments deeply curst,
  • Of hell-born passions far the worst,
  • What hope my pangs can now assuage? I tore me
    from thy circling arms,

Travelling (The Grand Tour)
  • Travelled around Europe from 1809 to
    1811.Essentially a pilgrimage to Rome.Had to
    avoid most of Central Europe (Napoleonian
    Wars)At that time it was acustomary for any
    young nobleman.Home to the Colosseumand Saint
    Peters tomb.

    awoke one morning and found myself
    famous.-Created a type of characterknown as
    the Byronic hero

Don Juan
  • First two parts published in 1819
    anonymously.Often disputed with his
    publisher.By 1824 he had written 16 cantoses,
    passed away before he could finish his
    work.Novel in verse, often called the epic of
    its time.Involves itself with its own
    contemporary world at everylevel social,
    political, literaryand ideological.

  • Often being described as the first modern style
    celebrity.He himself personificated the Byronic
    hero.Obtained a reputation as being
    extravagant, melancholic, courageous,
    unconventional, and controversial.Became a
    legend during his lifetime.Has inspired writers
    throughout the romantic age.

Death
  • -Died in 1824 in Greece at the age of
    36.-Was fighting aganist Turks.-The news of his
    death was a shock to all of Europe.-His remains
    are placed in the garden of Saint Marylebone
    Parish Church.But there is that within
    mewhich shall live.Torture and lime,and
    breathe when I expire
