Eine kleine Geschichte

Variant A Variant B Variant C der-words
ein-words unpreceded
Der alte Mann wohnt jetzt in der alten Stadt
neben dem blauen Meer. Er lebt seit vierzehn
langen Jahren mit seiner schƶnen Frau und ihren
sieben jungen Kindern.
Seine alte Mutter und sein alter Vater wohnen
auch in seinem alten Haus. Sie pflegen einen
kleinen Garten und einige guten HĆ¼hner.
Ihre schƶnen Blumen wachsen schnell bei schƶnem
Wetter in frischer Meeresluft.

Question 1 Does the adjective have an article in
front of it?
Question 1 Does the adjective have an article in
front of it?
Like der, die, das, ein, mein, unser, dieser,
jeder, etc.
If NO (if there is no article) add the ending
that would occur on aĀ der-wordĀ for that noun. For
instance
DeutschesĀ Bier schmeckt gut. (it would beĀ diesesĀ Bier, so we addĀ -esĀ toĀ deutsch)
Ich trinkeĀ kaltenĀ Kaffee gern. (it would beĀ diesenĀ Kaffee, so we addĀ -enĀ toĀ kalt)
If YES (if there is an article already), move on
to question 2.
15
Question 2 Is the article in the standard,
unchanged form?
(This references the second keep in mind described above.Ā "Ich seheĀ einĀ Buch",Ā even thoughĀ BuchĀ is in the accusative, uses the sameĀ einĀ form as the original nominative, so it is in the original form.)
If NO (if the article is different from its
original form), addĀ -en.
Ich kenne einenĀ gutenĀ Mann. (einen, masculine accusative, has changed from the originalĀ ein)
Ich spreche mit derĀ nettenĀ Frau. (der, feminine dative, has changed from the originalĀ die)
If YES (if the article is in its original form),
move on to question 3.
16
Question 3 Is the noun singular?
If NO (if the noun is plural), addĀ -en.
Ich sehe dieĀ jungenĀ Kinder. (die, plural accusative, is in its original form, but it is plural, so anĀ -enĀ is added toĀ jung)
KeineĀ schƶnenĀ Frauen waren da. (keine, plural nominative, is in its original form, but it is plural, so anĀ -enĀ is added toĀ schƶn)
If YES (if the noun is singular), move on to
question 4.
17
Question 4 Does the article show gender?
(This references the first keep in mind above.Ā Der Mann, den Mann, dem Mann, einen Mann,Ā andĀ einem MannĀ all show the gender ofĀ Mann, butĀ einĀ MannĀ does not.Ā Das Buch, dem Buch,Ā andeinem BuchĀ all show the gender ofĀ Buch, butĀ einĀ BuchĀ does not.Ā Die Frau, der Frau, eine Frau,Ā andĀ einer FrauĀ all show gender. As you see, pretty much the only articles which do not show gender areĀ einĀ and its equivalents (mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, Ihr).
18
If NO (if the article isĀ ein/dein/etc)
addĀ -erĀ for masculine nouns,Ā -esĀ for neuter nouns.
Das ist einĀ gutesĀ Buch. (something needs to show the -s that is inherent toĀ das BuchĀ -- sinceĀ einĀ does not show it,Ā -esĀ is added toĀ gut)
If YES (if the article already shows the gender) addĀ -e. If YES (if the article already shows the gender) addĀ -e. If YES (if the article already shows the gender) addĀ -e.
Ā  Hier ist eineĀ kleineĀ Lampe. (eineĀ shows thatĀ LampeĀ is feminine, so onlyĀ -eĀ is added toĀ klein)
Ā  Wo ist derĀ roteĀ Mantel? (derĀ shows thatĀ MantelĀ is masculine, so onlyĀ -eĀ is added toĀ rot)
