Starter Activity
  • List all of the things you have eaten in the last
    two days in one column and in the next write down
    whether you ate the food because you really
    needed to or did it just because it was there.

Why do we to eat?
  • Physical
  • Psychological
  • Social

Our bodies need food to function, muscles need
food so that they can contract and we can move
Comfort eating
We eat because it is a pleasurable experience and
it makes us feel safe
The environment in which we eat is important and
we sometimes eat when others do

Activity
Now look back at your starter piece of work and
in the third column write down whether it was a
psychological, physical or social reason.

Each food component is called a nutrient. Each of
these is essential to diet and has a main role or
function in the body.

Carbohydrates
  • Create a List of CHO and try to classify them
    into 2 main categories.

Fats
  • Create a List of FATS and try to classify them
    into 3 main categories.

Proteins
Create a List of Proteins and try to classify
them into 2 main categories.

Vitamins and Minerals
  • These are essential for bodily functions. Your
    diet of fruit and vegetables will contain most of
    these but you will need some animal products to
    get Vitamin B12 and D.

Dietary Fiber
  • Dietary fiber is not digested by the body but it
    is used to maintain the function of the gut.
    Most of the foods that contain this type of fibre
    are rich in carbohydrates.

Water vital to survival
  • Cell function.
  • Maintaining body temperature through sweating.
  • Transportation of nutrients and the movement of
    blood.
  • Removal of waste products via urination and
    breathing.
  • Lubrication of the joints.

Activity
  • Write out the foods you have eaten today and
    divide them up into the main categories listed in
    the previous slides.

Independent Study
  • Explain in a half page typed summary of what a
    balanced diet is, and find an example of a good
    balanced meal. Use the web or library to find
    your information.

Plenary
  • Tell the person sitting next to you about one of
    the six categories of food. They will then talk
    about another.
