Ticktock. Ticktock. Just over a week remains. If
the Democrats and Republicans don't stop
bickering and agree to how the U.S. should pay
its bills, the federal government will shut down,
come October 1. But what would a shutdown mean
for you? Would your daily life be affected? (The
answer's yes, so keep reading.) 1. Vacation all
I ever wanted Need to get away? Well, you can't.
At least not to national parks. Or to national
zoos. Or to national museums. 2. I won't back
down The good news (for you) is that the men and
women in uniform would continue to keep you safe.
The bad news (for them) is that they'd be paid in
IOUs until the shutdown ended. 3. You may be
thinking, "No functioning government, no need to
pay taxes." Think again. 4. Anything dirty or
dingy or dusty Oscar the Grouch is a company of
one. No one loves trash. But if you live in
Washington, expect it to pile up if there's a
shutdown. There wouldn't be anyone to collect
your garbage.

• Two crew members who went missing when their
  helicopter went into the Red Sea on Sunday are
  believed to be dead, the U.S. Navy said Monday.
  Search and rescue efforts for the two have been
  suspended, the Navy said. The sea lies between
  Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The helicopter
  landed on the deck of the guided-missile
  destroyer USS Lawrence, two Navy sources said,
  and three passengers got off. According to
  eyewitnesses, the two crew members were still
  aboard when, apparently, a wave hit the ship
  severe enough to cause the helicopter to fall
  into the sea, the sources told CNN.
• Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson suffered
  a bizarre and gruesome injury in the midst of the
  teams blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints in
  Week 3. According to Kent Somers of the Arizona
  Republic, the 27-year-old lost the top of his
  left middle finger and did not realize it until
  after he removed his glove.
