Kinetic and Potential Energy
  • What type of energy represents a soccer ball
    flying through the air?
  • It is moving, so it has Kinetic Energy
  • It is in the air, so it has Potential Energy.
  • Why? Because it is attracted to the Earth
    due to Gravity

  • Mechanical Energy is the sum of the potential and
    kinetic energy of a flying soccer ball or any
    other object
  • Thermal energy is the sum of the potential and
    kinetic energy of the particles that make up a
    material.
  • The particles that make up solids, liquids, and
    gasses are in constant motion so
    they have Kinetic energy.

Temperature
  • Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic
    energy of the particles that make up a substance
  • The slower the particles are moving, the lower
    the temperature
  • The faster the particles are moving,
    the higher the temperature

  • If a frozen pond melts, both ice and very cold
    water are present.
  • They have the same temperature.
  • Thus, the particles that make up the ice and
    water have the same average kinetic energy
  • However, they do not have the same thermal
    energy. The average distance between the
    particles that make up ice and
    water are different

What is Heat
  • Heat is the movement of thermal energy from a
    warmer object to a colder object.
  • All objects have thermal energy, however you heat
    something when thermal energy transfers
    from one object
    to another.

Heat transfer from the cup to her hands is less
than the transfer to the air, because the
temperature difference is less
