  • MLA style heading should be on the first page and
    page numbers should be included on each page.
  • All direct quotations from the play need to be
    cited and a works cited page should be included.

How to complete this assignment
  1. Answer the question.
  2. Provide evidence from the text (direct quotation
    or paraphrase) to support your answer.
  3. Write cohesively and succinctly (get to the
    answer and evidence as quickly and cleanly as
    possible).

1) Give a Synopsis of the play
  • Each act should be summarized and a statement
    about thematic development should be included.
  • Create a timeline in which you delineate (put in
    chronological order) the plot of the play.
  • Include the exposition, rising action, climax,
    falling action, and denouement (labeled on the
    timeline).
  • Bulleted statements and phrases may be used.

  • Provide at least ONE example of each of the

    (direct quotations should be used and cited)

3) Character Sketch
  • Write a two-paragraph character
    sketch for each of the following characters
  • Nora
  • Torvald
  • Krogstad
  • The first paragraph should contain a physical and
    emotional description.
  • The second paragraph should speak to the actions
    the character takes during the play and the
    motives (reasons) behind those actions.

4) Thematic Development
  • Provide a one-paragraph discussion identifying
    scenes and dialogue that support the following
    themes in the play
  • the coming of age and loss of innocence
  • the loss of female identity that demonstrates the
    inferior position of women in this society
  • the concept that ones highest duty is to oneself
    even if that duty breaks societys rules
  • the appearance of things does not always reflect
    reality and sometimes may mask the true reality

  • Cite three examples where the following symbols
    are referenced in the play
  • Macaroons
  • Letter box
  • Changing light
  • Explain the meaning behind each of these three
    symbols.

6) Social Problem Play
  • Identify three scenes in which Ibsen presents the
    audience with three social problems society faced
    during the time period of the play.
  • Explain Ibsens point of view on each.

7) Fatherhood and Motherhood
  • Provide three examples of Ibsens view of
    fatherhood as seen through the characters of 1)
    Torvald, 2) Krogstad, and 3) Dr. Rank.
  • Provide three examples of Ibsens view of
    motherhood as seen through the characters of 1)
    Nora, 2) Ann-Marie, and 3) Mrs. Linde.

8) Values
  • Choose one value seen in each character (Nora,
    Torvald, Krogstad, Linde, Rank).
  • Demonstrate through a direct quotation, how the
    audience sees the character act directly on that
    value.

  • Write three paragraphs
  • Define realism
  • Explain the social issues featuring in the play
  • Provide specific examples
    of each element of realism

  • Choose one of the 12 essay/discussion prompts and
    write a solid, coherent five-paragraph essay.
  • Include at least three (3) quotations from the
    play.
