Gypsies during the 15th Century
  • A nomadic people living in Europe from the 15th
    Century, Gypsies were singled out for persecution
    by the Nazis. Because they were not Jews, the
    Nazis did not feel a need to kill all of them.

Gypsies of the Holocaust
  • Roma, as they preferred to be called, were an
    ethnic group that originated from India.Their
    language is Romany, and for this reason, they
    lived a wandering lifestyle. In this photograph,
    Gypsy children are moving to another
    concentration camp.

  • Germans thought of Roma as inferiors, and they
    were starved and worked to death. Those who fell
    sick or became crippled were shot. Some were
    deported to the Lodz ghetto. Others were sent to
    the Gypsy Family Camp located in
    Auschwitz-Burkina. Entire families were
    incarcerated together. Of the 1 million Roma
    living in Europe, up to 220,000 were killed.

    transit camp. A transit camp was a place where
    Gypsies were temporarily held to go to
    concentration or death camps.

  • Heinrich Himmler, chief of the SS and the
    German police, wished to exempt two tribes of
    Gypsies at first, but that all changed in 1942.
    He signed a decree for all Gypsies to be shipped
    to Auschwitz. At Auschwitz they were subjected to
    everything, like medical experiments and
    extermination. Gypsies perished in Dachu,
    Mauthausen, Ravensbrueck and other camps.

Medical Experiments on Gypsies
  • Many Gypsies had medical experiments done on
    them. They were conducted by Dr. Josef Mengele.
    One of these experiments was for Gypsy women and
    men to be sterilized. This meant that Gypsy woman
    were not able to bear children. Hitler wanted to
    rid Germany of the Gypsies. Later this was also
    done to the Jews.
