What is Puritanism?
  • Puritanism is a way to consider Christianity.
  • It consists of a movement due to a group of
    people who wanted religious, moral and social
    reforms.
  • When?
  • It developed in the 16th century during the
    English Reformation, but it gained much popular
    support early in the 17th century.

Who?The Puritans
  • believe that the Bible was Gods true law
  • have strong spiritual beliefs
  • aim at purifying the Church of England
  • act against Anglicanism
  • believe in the importance of personal religious
    experience
  • believe in salvation and act in order to reach it.

The Puritans beliefs
  • According to the Puritans, religion should be
    very pure.
  • Man has to improve exploiting the talent that God
    gave to all of human beings.
  • God motivates all their actions.
  • The Scripture is their model of living the Bible
    provides a guide to live.
  • They state that the only head of the Church in
    heaven or earth is Christ .

  • In 1645 the Parliamentary Army defeated the
    Royalists.
  • The Puritans victory involved
  • the abolition of monarchy
  • the abolition of the Anglican Church
  • Oliver Cromwell was the leader of the Army.
  • The Commonwealth was born.

    England.
  • From that moment on the Puritans began ruling in
    England they imposed their ideas and acted in
    order to reform the State.

After the Restoration
  • The Anglican Church was restored
  • the Puritans were expelled from the Church of
    England.
  • They migrated to New England (America).
