CHALLENGES FACED BY ALL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO
HAVE WORKED IN RESOURCE POOR SETTINGS OR AREAS
OF DISASTER / CONFLICT
I was the only person who could crack an
abdomen. Now, here Im trained to do obstetrics
and GYNE, and oncology gynecology, but Im the
only one who can deal with bowel perforations,
typhoid, cholera, and Im not trained for any of
this. Im operating on kids, Im operating on
men, Im thrown into a whole bunch of
circumstances where I have to make a decision
whether Im going to operate or not, and knowing
if I dont, the persons going to die.

removed from any data collected.
When the supervising surgeon came down, he said
you shouldnt be doing these non-urgent
surgeries. Its easy for him to say, when
youre not one-to-one seeing patients who need
this desperately
