    to free South Korea from the Communist.

  • France took control of Vietnam during the
    Imperialism Era.
  • During the 1930s Ho Chi Minh, was a Vietnamese
    nationalist who turned to the Communist party.
  • French respond by jailing protestors.

  • When the Japanese leave in 1945, Minh believed
    independence was next.
  • Then in 1954 Dien Bien Phu fell to the Communists
    and the French were losing control.
  • The Domino Theory, that Southeast Asia would fall
    to communists was something Eisenhower feared.

  • After the French defeat the 17th latitude line
    was drawn.
  • COMMUNISM VS. DEMOCRACY
  • Ngo Dinh Diem, is President of South Vietnam.
  • However, the Vietcong, communist guerrillas start
    moving into the south with great success.

  • The Vietcong are made up of North Vietnamese and
    those unhappy with Diem in the south.
  • U.S. involvement in Vietnam
  • 1) Advisors,1959(Tonkin Gulf, 1964)
  • 2) By 1965, the U.S. had 185k soldiers fighting
    in Vietnam.
  • (War NEVER formally declared)

  • 1) Happens because of guerilla warfare. Unknown
    terrain.
  • 2) Ho Chi Minh support HIGH.
  • 3) Vietnamization, Nixons plan in 1969 to
    withdraw U.S. troops from Vietnam.

  • Continues with the Khmer Rouge, Communist rebels
    in Cambodia.
  • Still cautious there today.
