The city of St. Petersburg is relatively young if
judged by Russian or European standards. Founded
in 1703, St. Petersburg will in 2003 celebrate
its 300th anniversary. But despite being a young
city it has a rich and exciting history. Known as
Peter the Great's "Paradise" and "Northern
Venice" in the early days, St. Petersburg has
always been a city of myth and mystery you can
hardly find a young city which is wrapped in
legends and stories in such a unique way.

Peter the Great , born on May 30, 1672,
ruled jointly with his brother Ivan V from 1682.
With Ivan's death in 1696, Peter took office
independently. During his reign, Peter
undertook extensive reforms He created a regular
army and navy, and brought the Church under
control. He paid particular attention to the
development of science. He was a far-sighted and
skillful diplomat and a talented military leader.
Under Peter's rule, Russia became a great
European nation. Peter died from a chill on
January 28, 1725.

May 30, 2003The 300th anniversary of the city
The celebrations lasted for ten days. More than
45 heads of state came to the city. Tuesday's
party, though, was for the people. It started
with a bang - with a daytime firework display
over Senate Square on the banks of the river
Neva. Multi-coloured balloons floated high into
the sky above the city's most famous monument
"I am old now, so I can't jump and sing for joy,"
Ira, one of the citizen who came to the party,
said. "But I wanted to come here anyway. It is
good that people still care."
