28FOCUS ON DOCTORS WITHOUT BOARDERS ACTIVITIES IN
HAITI
29Doctors Without Boarders History in Haiti
Doctor without border has started their
activities in Haiti since 1991, and they has
never stopped working there until this moment.
However, many people did not know this
organization, or even about their activities in
Haiti, until the earthquake that hit Haiti in
2010. that caused a major devastation for the
infrastructure, which impact on the health
condition all over the country as well.
Mainly, since they had arrived there they were
providing people with the health care, that they
need, especially in the rural areas, and also,
they were supporting the local medical units.
30Doctors Without Boarders at the Time of the
Earthquake in Haiti
Doctors without boarders teams were one of the
most effective groups in the rescue operation
after the earthquake. In that point, there were
about 800 field staff who were working in three
medical centers before that. That number had
increased after the earthquake to reach 3,400
field staff who were working in 26 hospitals and
clinics covering the effected area.
31Doctors Without Boarders During the First Three
Months in Haiti After the Earthquake hit
Doctors without boarders teams treated 165,000
people, distributed 28,000 shelters and 85,000
non-food item kits, rehabilitated 10 hospitals,
and constructed four new facilities. Also,
surgeons made 5,707 major surgical operations.
The Cuban medical cooperated team reported 3,562
major operations in the same period.
32Cholera Epidemic and Doctors Without Boarders
Role
As we know, the Cholera is an epidemic which
spreading by the polluted water. After the
earthquake hit, this disease appeared, and made
it worst for Haitians. Doctors Without Boarders
took the first action to fight against it. Then
they started immediately treating people who have
the symptoms, during a few days they the were
able to take 150 patients a day. In addition,
they built isolation camps. Eventually, they were
able to treat 91,000 Cholera Patients.
33Doctors Without Boarders Achievements on Haitis
file
Since they have started on January 12 until
October 31, their staff treated more than 358,000
people, performed more than 16,570 surgeries, and
delivered more than 15,100 babies. This
organization also uses mobile and fixed-point
clinics to provide primary medical care and
relief supplies to people who are living in any
other areas out of the capital. Furthermore,
until January 2, 2011, doctors without boarders
teams had treated 91,000 cholera cases in 47
treatment centers located around the country.
34Doctors Without Borders in Somalia
35- Field Staff 1,452 Reason for Intervention
- Armed Conflict
- Endemic/Epidemic Disease
- Natural Disaster
- They are working in Somalia since 1991As of
February 2009 MSFs projects continue to be run
by dedicated Somali staff, supported by
international staff based in Nairobi - - free medical services.
- - providing primary health care.
- - malnutrition treatment.
- - health care and support to displaced people.
- - surgery, water and relief supply distributions
in nine regions of the country -
36-
- What they did for Somalia
- For example 2008
- They provided 727,428 outpatient
- consultations, 267,168 of them are children under
five. - Over 55,000 women received ante-natal care
consultations and more than 24,000 people were
admitted as inpatients to MSF supported hospitals
and health clinics. - 3,878 surgeries were performed, 1,249 of which
were for injuries caused by violence. - Medical teams treated 1,036 people suffering
from the deadly neglected disease kala azar - more than 4,000 people for malaria and started
1,556 people on TB treatment. - Nearly 35,000 people suffering
from malnutrition were provided with food and
medical care and 82,174 vaccinations were given.
37- On the road from Mogadishu to Afgooye,
where thousands of people have been forced to
flee the violence of the capital, there are
thought to be more than 300,000 displaced people
living in terrible conditions. - MSF has been in the area since 2007 supporting a
private clinic running an outpatient department,
cholera treatment center, and nutrition program
and managing the distribution of water, blankets,
and other non-food items. - Medical teams treated more than 15,500
malnourished children under the age of five. More
than 2,000 of the children were admitted to
intensive care, but most were cared for as
outpatients. -
38 39- In Mogadishu, staff in the surgery department of
Danilye hospital treated 5,250 patients in
the emergency room, including more than 3,000
people wounded in the conflict More than half the
patients were women and children under the age of
14. - Yet it is not just victims of violence who
need assistance in Somalia. Curable and
preventable diseases such as diarrhea, malaria,
and respiratory tract infections cause many
thousands of deaths every year
40- Other places they worked inBakool
Region, Banadir Region, Daynile Area, Bay
Region, Galgaduud Region, Hiraan Region, Lower
Juba Region, Marere, Jamaame, Middle
