Title: 1 John 1:5-7

1
1 John 15-7
  • Conditions for Fellowship

2
  • John defends his position and importance of the
his message. At the time of his writings
(epistle/ Gospel), Peter has been regarded as
    leader of the church.
  • 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on
this rock I will build my church, and the gates
of Hades will not overcome it.
  • Matthew 1618

3
  • John Vidmar writes
  • "Both Catholic and Protestant scholars agree that
Peter had an authority that superseded that of
the other apostles. Peter is their spokesman at
several events, he conducts the election of
Matthias, his opinion in the debate over
    converting Gentiles was crucial, etc.

4
  • The early Church historian Eusebius (c. AD 325)
records Clement of Alexandria (c. AD 190) as
    saying,
  • "For they say that Peter and James and John after
the ascension of our Saviour, as if also
preferred by our Lord, strove not after honor,
but chose James the Just bishop of Jerusalem."

5
  • John makes note of comparable, situational
actions between Peter and himself to affirm his
position as passionate, devoted follow of Christ
whom developed a close bond with Jesus.
  • His points were not intended to denigrate Peter
but rather to give his writings equal attestation
    and authority as Peters.

6
  • 15 Simon Peter and another disciple were
following Jesus. Because this disciple was known
to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the
high priests courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait
outside at the door. The other disciple, who was
known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the
servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
    John 1815-16

7
  • 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the
disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said
to her, Woman, here is your son, 27 and to the
disciple, Here is your mother. From that time
on, this disciple took her into his home.
  • John 1926-27

8
  • 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the
other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said,
They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we
dont know where they have put him! 3 So Peter
and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4
Both were running, but the other disciple outran
Peter and reached the tomb first. John 202-4

9
  • 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore,
but the disciples did not realize that it was
Jesus. 5 He called out to them, Friends, havent
you any fish? No, they answered.6 He said,
Throw your net on the right side of the boat and
you will find some. When they did, they were
unable to haul the net in because of the large
number of fish. 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus
loved said to Peter, It is the Lord!
  • John 214-7

10
  • 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom
Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one
who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper
and had said, Lord, who is going to betray
you?) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, Lord,
what about him? 22 Jesus answered, If I want
him to remain alive until I return, what is that
to you? You must follow me. John 2120-22

11
  • Johns writes apologetically to prove
  • 1) Though Peter had ordained position, John knew
the thoughts and message of Christ because of his
    relationship.
  • 2) His passion and pursuit of Christ was at the
    highest degree (obedient disciple).
  • 3) Never refuted Peters calling and purpose but
wanted their message to be regarded as equal.

12
  • 5 This is the message we have heard from him and
declare to you God is light in him there is no
darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship
with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and
do not live out the truth. 1 John 15, 6

13
God is Light
  • 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and
the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and
empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the
waters.3 And God said, Let there be light, and
    there was light.
  • Genesis 11-3

14
  • 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly
lights, who does not change like shifting
    shadows. James 117
  • The light mentioned is a Moral Reference. Johns
description of light is a note on Jesus
    nature.

15
  • 4 God saw that the light was good, and he
separated the light from the darkness.
  • Genesis 14
  • 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of
all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was
a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He
came as a witness to testify concerning that
light, so that through him all might believe. the
    world. John 14-7

16
  • 8 He (John the Baptist) himself was not the
light he came only as a witness to the light. 9
The true light that gives light to everyone was
coming into the world. John 18-9
  • Exodus 3318-23
  • Moses request
  • God could NOT reveal His glory because man was
    sinful. Jesus was the light!

17
  • Mixing Light and Darkness still produces
    darkness.
  • Jesus was absolutely perfect
  • He Never apologized
  • He Never exonerated Himself
  • He constantly spoke about Himself.
  • He never made a wrong statement.
  • He lived spotless and blameless life!.

18
Fellowship with God
  • Johns instructions
  • A Man that desires to have true communion with
God will chose to walk uprightly, free from evil
deeds, completely this man will strive to walk
in perfect morality. As representatives of Christ
we should exemplify purity and separation from
    evil.

19
Light as Truth
  • Light denotes Moral Perfection and Purity.
  • Light also denotes Biblical Truth.
  • 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me
will never walk in darkness, but will have the
    light of life. John 812

20
  • Were the words spoken by Jesus always accurate?
  • Answer They were accurate because He spoke them.
    (His words always bring enlightenment).
  • 3 What if some were unfaithful? Will their
unfaithfulness nullify Gods faithfulness? 4 Not
at all! Let God be true, and every human being a
liar. As it is written So that you may be
proved right when you speakand prevail when you
    judge. Romans 33, 4

21
  • 37 You are a king, then! said Pilate. Jesus
answered, You say that I am a king. In fact, the
reason I was born and came into the world is to
testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of
truth listens to me. John 1837
  • Truth- Anyone obeying Words and instruction of
    Jesus.

22
  • 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile,
the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who
practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars
they will be consigned to the fiery lake of
burning sulfur. This is the second death.
    Revelation 218
  • All liars-not a reference to those bearing false
witness but rather an all-inclusive term
referencing those living contrary to God.

23
  • Author of Revelation is John.
  • John places the highest value on the words of
Jesus. Not only are they valuable teachings
offering principles of life but it His words are
truth, life, and light! His words are the words
    of God!
  • 5 This is the message we have heard from him and
declare to you God is light in him there is no
darkness at all. 1 John 15

24
  • This is the message we have heard from him-
    Johns personal knowledge
  • God is light- Only source of moral perfection
    and absolute accurate statements.
  • No darkness at all-Reiterates no moral or
    sovereign imperfection.
  • Johns statements on Jesus being light and truth
    prove deity of Christ!

25
  • If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet
walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out
    the truth. 1 John 16
  • Johns purpose in writing is to combat
Gnosticism, Docetism, and other heretical views.
  • The message is clear true followers (fellowship)
of Christ obey His words and pursue Holiness.

26
  • 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and
the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all
    sin. 1 John 17
  • A genuine follower of Christ walks in truth and
holiness. Sharing in these traits unites or
brings fellowship with other followers. A person
who denies Christs words or does not seek
morality as Christ is out of fellowship..

27
  • What is the result of striving to obey Gods Word
    and constantly seeking morality?
  • His blood purifies (cleanses) us from all sin.
  • Katharize (?a?a???e?)- active verb meaning I
    clean remove filth. Present-passive and
    aorist-passive tense (cleanseth) indicating
    present work.

28
  • This teaches that the work of sanctification is a
gradual and continual work. The blood of Jesus
effect is dependent on our compliance to
Scripture and desire to emulate Christ.
  • Oral confession does not apply the blood on our
    lives but obedient devotion does!
