3Language is Culture
- Richard Elmore (Instructional Rounds 2008)
points out that the language we use shapes the
culture of the institution. - What do people say to you?
- What do you say to others?
- What do you say to yourself?
4Re-framing Language
- Fixed Mindset Communication
- Growth Mindset Communication
- I appreciate that you put effort into everything
you do. - Lets run this by our leadership group to survey
where staff might be on this - Our staff is committed to continuous improvement
- Lets see how their success can inspire us.
- Everything you do is brilliant
- Its not the right time to bring this to our site
- We have a very intelligent staff
- Our site/students/situation is different
5Re-framing Language
Growth Mindset Self-Talk
They would never consider me I will look for an opportunity to showcase my skills
I am always messing that up I need a new strategy for this situation
Why cant I stop doing that? If I ask for some support, I can change my response/behavior/etc.
I cant do this anymore I need help, or I need to make some choices
That is not my style It will take some practice to learn that!
6Motivation
- Carrots and sticks do (not) work for very long
- Autonomy is extremely important to human beings
- Mastery requires engagement (Flow)
- Humans seek purpose (think purpose maximization)
7How do we motivate people?
- Leadership 1.0 Have the biggest muscles,
weapons, army, treasure chest - Leadership 2.0 have an action plan, measures,
stipends, and performance review - Leadership 3.0 Know HOW to GROW your people
8Can YOU help people change their habits,
thinking, and beliefs?
- Every change process must deal with these facts
about humans - We have a rational brain (the Rider)
- We have an emotional brain (the Elephant)
- We work and live in an environment (our Path)
9What does this mean for leaders?
10Recipe for Change
- Direct the Rider
- Motivate the Elephant
- Set the Path

11Think-Pair-Table Share
- Consider a plan/initiative you have seen
implemented at a school. Look at it through the
lens of Switch. Did the implementation include
those elements? How successful was/is it?
12Love what you do

13What do you love about your vocation?
14The journey IS the destination
15Become a school
A leader can weather the storms because s/he
has a vision, a purpose, and knows that effort
and time are essential ingredients to the journey.
