Juan 45 - 42
5 En aquel tiempo, llegó Jesús a un pueblo de
Samaria, llamado Sicar, cerca del campo que dio
Jacob a su hijo José.
6 Ahí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, que venia
cansado del camino, se sentó sin más en el
brocal del pozo. Era cerca del mediodía.
7 Entonces llegó una mujer de Samaria a sacar
agua y Jesús le dijo Dame de beber,

8 (Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar
comida).
9 La samaritana le contesto Cómo es que tu,
siendo judío, me pides de beber a mí, que soy
samaritana? (Porque los judíos no tratan a los
samaritanos).
10 Jesús le dijo Si conocieras el don de Dios
y quién es el que te pide de beber, tú le
pedirías a él, y él te daría agua viva.

11 La mujer le respondió Señor, ni siquiera
tienes con que sacar agua y el pozo es
profundo, cómo vas a darme agua viva?
12 Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Jacob,
que nos dio este pozo, del que bebieron él, sus
hijos y sus ganados?
13 Jesús le contestó El que bebe de esta agua
vuelve a tener sed.
14 Pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré,
nunca mas tendrá sed el agua que yo le daré se
convertirá dentro de él en un manantial capaz de
dar la vida eterna".

15 La mujer le dijo Señor, dame de esa agua
para que no vuelva a tener sed ni tenga que venir
hasta aquí a sacarla.
16 Él le dijo Ve a llamar a tu marido y
vuelve.
17 La mujer le contestó No tengo marido.
Jesús le dijo Tienes razón en decir No
tengo marido.
18 Has tenido cinco, y el de ahora no es tu
marido. En eso has dicho la verdad.
19 La mujer le dijo Señor, ya veo que eres
profeta.

20 Nuestros padres dieron culto en este monte y
ustedes dicen que el sitio donde se debe dar
culto esta en Jerusalén.
21 Jesús le dijo Créeme, mujer, que se
acerca la hora en que ni en este monte ni en
Jerusalén adoraran al Padre.
22 Ustedes adoran lo que no conocen nosotros
adoramos lo que conocemos. Porque la salvación
viene de los judíos.
23 Pero se acerca la hora, y ya esta aquí,
en que los que quieran dar culto verdadero
adoraran al Padre en espíritu y en verdad,
porque así es como el Padre quiere que se le dé
culto.

24 Dios es espíritu, y los que lo adoran deben
hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad.
25 La mujer le dijo Ya sé que va a venir el
Mesías (es decir, Cristo). Cuando venga, él
nos dará razón de todo.
26 Jesús le dijo Soy yo, el que habla
contigo.
27 En esto llegaron los discípulos y se
sorprendieron de que estuviera conversando con
una mujer sin embargo, ninguno le dijo Qué
le preguntas o de qué hablas con ella?

28 Entonces la mujer dejo su cántaro, se fue al
pueblo y comenzó a decir a la gente
29 Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho
todo lo que he hecho. No será este el Mesías?
30 Salieron del pueblo y se pusieron en camino
hacia donde él estaba.
31 Mientras tanto, sus discípulos le insistían
Maestro, come.
32 Él les dijo Yo tengo por comida un
alimento que ustedes no conocen.

33 Los discípulos comentaban entre sí Le
habrá traído alguien de comer?
34 Jesús les dijo Mi alimento es hacer la
voluntad del que me envió y llevar a termino su
obra.
35 Acaso no dicen ustedes que todavía faltan
cuatro meses para la siega? Pues bien, yo les
digo Levanten los ojos y contemplen los
campos, que ya están dorados para la siega.
36 Ya el segador recibe su jornal y almacena
frutos para la vida eterna. De este modo se
alegran por igual el sembrador y el segador.

37 Aquí se cumple el dicho Uno es el que
siembra y otro el que cosecha.
38 Yo Ios envié a cosechar lo que no habían
trabajado. Otros trabajaron y ustedes
recogieron su fruto.
39 Muchos Samaritanos de aquel poblado creyeron
en Jesús por el testimonio de la mujer Me dijo
todo lo que he hecho.
40 Cuando los Samaritanos llegaron a donde él
estaba, le rogaban que se quedara con ellos, y
sé quedo allí dos días.

41 Muchos mas creyeron en él al oír su palabra.
42 Y decían a la mujer Ya no creemos por lo
que tú nos has contado, pues nosotros mismos lo
hemos oído y sabemos que él es, de veras, el
salvador del mundo.

5 So Jesus came to a town of Samaria called
Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had
given to his son Joseph.
6 Jacobs well was there. Jesus, tired from
his journey, sat down there at the well. It
was about noon.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus
said to her, Give me a drink.
8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy
food.

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, How can
you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for
a drink? (For Jews use nothing in common with
Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered and said to her, If you
knew the gift of God and who is saying to
you, Give me a drink, you would have asked
him and he would have given you living water.
11 The woman said to him, Sir, you do not
even have a bucket and the well is deep
where then can you get this living water?

12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who
gave us this well and drank from it himself
with his children and his flocks?
13 Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone
who drinks this water will be thirsty again
14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give
will never thirst the water I shall give will
become in him a spring of water welling up to
eternal life.
15 The woman said to him, Sir, give me this
water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to
keep coming here to draw water.

16 Jesus said to her, Go call your husband
and come back.
17 The woman answered and said to him, I do
not have a husband. Jesus answered her, You
are right in saying, I do not have a husband.
18 For you have had five husbands, and the one
you have now is not your husband. What you have
said is true.
19 The woman said to him, Sir, I can see that
you are a prophet.

20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain
but you people say that the place to worship is
in Jerusalem.
21 Jesus said to her, Believe me, woman, the
hour is coming when you will worship the Father
neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22 You people worship what you do not
understand we worship what we understand,
because salvation is from the Jews.

23 But the hour is coming, and is now here,
when true worshipers will worship the Father in
Spirit and truth and indeed the Father
seeks such people to worship him.
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him
must worship in Spirit and truth.
25 The woman said to him, I know that the
Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed
when he comes, he will tell us everything.
26 Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who
is speaking with you.

27 At that moment his disciples returned, and
were amazed that he was talking with a woman,
but still no one said, What are you looking
for? or Why are you talking with her?
28 The woman left her water jar and went into
the town and said to the people,
29 Come see a man who told me everything I have
done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?
30 They went out of the town and came to him.

31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him,
Rabbi, eat.
32 But he said to them, I have food to eat of
which you do not know.
33 So the disciples said to one another, Could
someone have brought him something to eat?
34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the
will of the one who sent me and to finish his
work.
35 Do you not say, In four months the harvest
will be here? I tell you, look up and see
the fields ripe for the harvest.

36 The reaper is already receiving his payment
and gathering crops for eternal life, so that
the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
37 For here the saying is verified that One
sows and another reaps.
38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked
for others have done the work, and you are
sharing the fruits of their work.
39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to
believe in him because of the word of the woman
who testified, He told me everything I have
done.

40 When the Samaritans came to him, they
invited him to stay with them and he stayed
there two days.
41 Many more began to believe in him because of
his word,
42 and they said to the woman, We no longer
believe because of your word for we have heard
for ourselves, and we know that this is
truly the savior of the world.

On the Third Sunday of Lent 2014 the Gospel
story is about the Samaritan woman. It shows
Jesus revealing his method and his soul. He
shows he is human. He is tired from his journey,
and he sat down at the village well. It is the
sixth hour, or noontime, the hour of thirst.

En el Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma de 2014 el
Evangelio se trata de la Mujer Samaritana.
Muestra a Jesús revelando su método y su alma.
Muestra que es humano. Esta cansado de su
jornada. Y se sienta al pie de la noria de la
aldea. Es la sexta hora, o medio día. Es la
hora de la sed.

The woman most probably came from the fields.
Jesus initiates the conversation. He says to
her Give me a drink. In so doing, he broke
the rules of his day. He spoke to a woman. He
spoke to a Samaritan. And he spoke to a
sinner.

La mujer probablemente vino del campo. Jesús
toma la iniciativa al hablarle a ella. Le dice
Dame de beber. Al hacer esto, quebró las
reglas del día. Le habló a una mujer. Le
habló a una Samaritana. Y le hablo a una
pecadora.

St. Augustine (Tractates on the Gospel of John
15.12), said Jesus thirsts for the faith of a
human soul and he sought to quench his bodily
thirst. In return he offers living water.
This will be like a fresh visible spring (unlike
the dormant water of cisterns that are hidden
and stagnant).

San Agustín (Tractatus sobre el Evangelio de Juan
15.12), dice que Jesús tenía sed no solo de su
cuerpo sino que también tenía sed por la fe de
una alma humana. En cambio, él ofrece agua
viva. Esto será como un ojo fresco y visible,
(y no como el agua estancada de una cisterna
que esta escondida).

Note his way of proceeding (1) From the
thought of national hatreds (Jews vs.
Samaritans) he raises us up to the thought of
Gods love and the gift of heaven which is his
own presence. (2) From the theme of difficulty
of hauling from a deep well, he raises us up to
the possibility that he is greater than Jacob.

pensamiento de odios nacionales (Judío contra
Samaritano) nos levanta a pensar del amor de
Dios y el don del cielo que es su presencia.

(3) From the comparison of himself and Jacob,
He raises us up to a comparison of two waters
(a) Jacobs water, which relieves thirst only
for a time, and (b) His water, which relieves
thirst perpetually. It is efficacious for
everlasting life.

(3) De la comparación de sí mismo y Jacobo,
nos levanta a hacer una comparación de dos tipos
de agua (a) El agua de Jacobo que solo releva
la sed por un poco tiempo, y (b) Su agua viva
que releva la sed perpetuamente. Su eficacia
llega hasta la vida eterna.

A word needs to be said about water. There are
various kinds of water. First there is stagnant
water, which has no life. It has no oxygen,
therefore cannot keep fish alive. Then there is
cistern water, which may be good for drinking
purposes, but lies hidden in darkness.

Es necesario hacer una observación acerca del
agua. Hay varias clases de agua. Primero hay
agua estancada, que no tiene vida. No tiene
oxígeno, y por eso no pueden vivir pescados
allí. Luego hay agua de cisterna, que puede
ser buena para tomar, pero está escondida en la
oscuridad.

Then there is running water, which, in churning,
picks up oxygen and thus gets cleaned up at
the same time. It is certainly fit for fish to
live, and for spawning new life.

Luego hay agua que corre, y al estar agitada,
levanta el oxigeno y es limpiada al mismo
tiempo. Aseguradamente es buena para los
pescados, allí no-solo pueden vivir sino que
también pueden poner sus huevitos y procrear, y
traer nueva vida al mundo.

Jesus said that the living water that he would
give would become a spring of water welling up to
eternal life (John 414). And whoever drinks
of this water that he will give, will never
thirst.

Jesús dijo que el Agua Viva que el dará será como
un ojo de agua brotando hasta la vida eterna
(Juan 414). Y aquel que beba de esta agua
nunca tendrá sed.

Next the woman asks for this water Sir
(kyrios Lord), give me this water, so that
I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming
here to draw water. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
says she thirsted for life itself. Jesus then
calls attention to the real dilemma, the
deep-seated waywardness of her existence

Entonces la mujer pide esta agua Señor
(Kyrios Dios), dame agua de ésa así no
tendré más sed ni tendré que venir aquí a
sacarla (Juan 415). El Papa Emeritus
Benedicto XVI dice que ella tenía sed para vida
misma. Jesús entonces le llama la atención al
mero dilema su modo de existir que estaba
profundamente fuera del orden.

She is brought face to face with herself. We
are like that woman. When we finally ask for
Jesus and his living water, we realize there
are certain things that we need to do. Our hope
in Jesus will not disappoint. We will not die
in our thirst. Jesus is in our midst. He will
not let that happen!

Tuvo que verse a sí misma cara a cara. Somos
como esa mujer. Cuando finalmente pedimos a
Jesús por su agua viva, nos damos cuenta que
hay ciertas cosas que hay que hacer. Nuestra
esperanza en Jesús no nos desilusiona. No
moriremos en nuestra sed. Jesús esta en medio
de nosotros. Él no permitirá que eso suceda.
Ni lo mande Dios!

The Samaritan woman found out she had to be
truthful. Jesus told her, the time is coming
when worshipers will worship the Father in spirit
and in truth. When she says I know that
when the Messiah comes he will show us all
things. Jesus says I who speak to you am he
(John 426).

La mujer Samaritana se dio cuenta que tenía que
ser verdadera. Jesús le dijo Créeme,
mujer Se acerca la hora en que darán culto al
Padre con espíritu y verdad (Juan 423).
Cuando ella dice Yo sé que va a venir el
Mesías, el Ungido cuando Él venga nos lo
explicará todo. Jesús le contestó Soy yo,
el que habla contigo (Juan 426).

She knew he was a prophet because of (1) the
special knowledge he exhibited. And (2)
because of his desire to reform her life,
expecting her to (3) restore proper worship
and (4) asking her to settle her legal problems
so as to be worthy.

Ella se dio cuenta que Él era un profeta por
razón de (1) su conocimiento especial que
exhibió y (2) por razón de su deseo de
reformar su vida, esperando que ella (3)
volviera al culto propio y (4) por razón de
que Él le pedía que arreglara sus problemas
legales para ser digna.

The Samaritan woman leaves her water jar behind.
(Note that water jars were pretty expensive and
special things, so this is symbolic). It
meant that was no longer of value. It would be
useless for the type of water Jesus had begun
to give her. It is a sign of her conversion.

La mujer Samaritana dejó el cántaro (Juan 428).
(Noten que los cántaros son de mucho valor,
de modo que esto es simbólico). Significa que
tal sería inútil para el tipo de agua que Jesús
comenzó a darle. Esto fue una seña de su

When we have a conversion, there is a waking up
to the fact that the old stuff just wont do
anymore. We have to make some changes. They may
be very profound. After all, the water that
Jesus has to give comes from a very deep well.
And it will never run out. And it is so much
better than the old. When people heard Jesus
speak, they said No one has ever spoken this
way (John 746).

Cuando tenemos una conversión, despierta uno a la
realidad de que lo de antes ya no vale para nada.
Tenemos que hacer unos cambios. Pueden ser
muy profundos. El agua viva que Jesús nos
quiere dar viene de una noria muy profunda.
Nunca se acabará. Y es mucho mejor que la
antigua. Cuando la gente oyó a Jesús hablar
así, dijeron Nadie jamás nos ha hablado de
esta manera (Juan 746).

Come Lord, give us your living water to drink!
Ven, Señor, danos tu agua viva para beber!
