Title: STATUS EMPLOYMENT
1STATUS EMPLOYMENT
- Robert Elston
- Chief Executive
2MISSION STATEMENT
-
- Status Employment
- Moving towards, gaining and remaining in work
-
3OUR VALUES
- 50 of working age disabled people not in work
Disabled people are more than twice as likely
than non-disabled people to have no
qualifications. Status Employment will always
challenge disabling attitudes to ensure that work
and training opportunities are a matter of equal
right. Status Employment promotes the social
model of disability, which asserts that people,
policy and the built environment disable
individuals.
4Supported Employment
- We have been a traditional Supported Employment
agency since 1992. We originally worked with
people with learning disabilities and since 1998
people receiving mental health services. The
model that we work to is to a place train and
support working in partnership with health
professionals.

10SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENTCASE STUDY
11Daniel
12Prior to Attending Status
- Daniel has been in the mental health system for
many years. - Had not been in a permanent job for at least six
years
13Attending Status Employment
- Carried out a Vocational Profile
- Compiled Support Strategy
- Carried out job search, interview techniques and
mock interviews
14Starting Employment
- Daniel started work as an assistant in the
Clinical Coding Department - Working with Daniels Supervisor, Manager and
Occupational Health - Marriage, mortgage and promotion
15Employers View of Supported Employment
- As an employer I have found the support provided
to both myself and my employee to be invaluable. - If it wasnt for Elaines support I am sure
Daniel would have taken more sickness days.
16Employers View of Supported Employment
- Also as an employer it is excellent to be able to
discuss my concerns regarding Daniels well being
or performance as they arise.
17Employers View Of Supported Employment
- I am certain that without this support some
people with mental health issues would struggle
to hold down jobs. As an employer I dont think
we would have found it so easy to support Daniel
without the structure of supported employment
being in place.
18Daniels View On Supported Employment
- Elaine was more interested in helping me find
the job that was suitable for me and not just
forcing me into any job. I found the most
suitable job for me and with the support that
Elaine gave me I have been able to hold the job
down for 3 years
19Finding Work For People With Mental Health Issues
- No one size fits all. It is important to
reassess your options. Elaine helped me do this
and helped me realize I was no longer going to
earn my previous salary, though with support
which was invaluable it has given me confidence
to gain two promotions
20Stigma
- Stigma is still a big problem. The fear of being
discriminated against is as real as being
discriminated against. The current trend is to
brandish every person with a mental health
problem as a benefit scrounging layabout. It is
simply not helpful. That is why the support of
Elaine is invaluable by helping to educate the
employers
21Concerns about Disclosing
- Everything about disclosure concerned me. That
is why I had chosen self employment as a way of
avoiding the whole issue. My worry was that any
employer would see the illness not the employee
22Stress
- The NHS is a high stress environment and the
work gets to everyone. My boss has said to me she
wished she had an Elaine for every one of her
staff. Without her supporting both me and the
employer I think it would have got very
complicated and messy
