• Why do adults drink alcohol?
• To relax, feel confident, drink with meals, or
  get drunk
• U.S. History
• Alcohol was part of colonial life
• sanitary nutritious
• preservative w/ vitamins, minerals, yeast made
  from fruits, grains, vegetables
• part of rum trade (first U.S. exports)
• In 1800s, Americans drank at least twice the
  amount of alcohol today per person

History of alcohol in the U.S.

• Temperance Movement and Anti-Saloon League led
  to
• Prohibition
• 18th Amendment of 1920 made alcohol illegal
• Good for health
• fewer accidents, deaths
• Problems Made gangsters rich and powerful, and
  made most Americans criminals.
• 21st Amendment of 1933 repealed Prohibition
• generated jobs and tax revenue

Alcohol use today

• Drinking has decreased gradually
• Less use of distilled spirits
• a voluntary ban on TV advertisements of distilled
  spirits by manufacturers has ceased to boost sales

Types of Drinkers

• Social Drinkers
• able to abstain at will
• Problem Drinkers
• may have trouble abstaining and have problems
• may not drink frequently
• Blackout temporary memory loss
• alcohol disrupts protein synthesis in the neuron

• Underage drinkers (10 of all consumption)
• In 70s drinking age lowered to 18
• By 88 all states adopt a drinking age of 21
• 5,000 people under the age of 21 die every year
  as a result of underage drinking (accidents,
  homicides, health effects)
• at risk for heavy drinking later in life

• Abstainers
• basic underlying reasons for not drinking
  upbringing, religious convictions and the view
  that alcohol is bad for ones health
• Responsible Drinker
• goal of anyone who drinks alcohol

Alcoholism

• Alcoholic
• problems with drinking
• inability to control drinking
• (a problem drinker who is dependent on alcohol)
• Do you get it from your parents?
• Studies show children of alcoholics become
  alcoholics at a higher rate
• Hard to eliminate environmental factors
• Most children of alcoholics DO NOT become
  alcoholics
• COAs and ACOAs (children of alcoholics adult
  children of alcoholics)
• Child is not to blame
• Be wary of enabling.

• serotonin (reduce your inhibitions)
• dopamine pleasure
• Can increase anxiety
• Liver
• fatty liver
• hepatitis
• cirrhosis irreversible
• risk for liver cancer
• Gastrointestinal Tract
• stimulates gastric juices
• stomach bleeding

• Cardiovascular System
• moderate use is good
• especially red wine
• heavy use weakens heart muscle - high blood
  pressure
• Immune System
• interferes with white blood cells
• T lymphocytes
• Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
• 1st trimester
• no safe level of consumption!

• Drinking Driving
• fatalities have declined dramatically since 86
• 52 down to 29 of all traffic fatalities
• Alcohol is associated with health problems,
  accidents, suicide, violence, unplanned
  unprotected sex and down right stupidity so why
  is it still legal?
