  • Alcohol was part of colonial life
  • sanitary nutritious
  • preservative w/ vitamins, minerals, yeast made
    from fruits, grains, vegetables
  • part of rum trade (first U.S. exports)
  • In 1800s, Americans drank at least twice the
    amount of alcohol today per person

  • Temperance Movement and Anti-Saloon League led
    to
  • Prohibition
  • 18th Amendment of 1920 made alcohol illegal
  • Good for health
  • fewer accidents, deaths
  • Problems Made gangsters rich and powerful, and
    made most Americans criminals.
  • 21st Amendment of 1933 repealed Prohibition
  • generated jobs and tax revenue

Types of Drinkers
  • Social Drinkers
  • able to abstain at will
  • Problem Drinkers
  • may have trouble abstaining and have problems
  • may not drink frequently
  • Blackout temporary memory loss
  • alcohol disrupts protein synthesis in the neuron

  • Underage drinkers (10 of all consumption)
  • In 70s drinking age lowered to 18
  • By 88 all states adopt a drinking age of 21
  • 5,000 people under the age of 21 die every year
    as a result of underage drinking (accidents,
    homicides, health effects)
  • at risk for heavy drinking later in life

    children of alcoholics)
  • Child is not to blame
  • Be wary of enabling.
