Lesson Aim- To develop our knowledge and
understanding of the Chartists.
  • We need to know about-
  • Who were the Chartists?
  • What were their aims?
  • What methods did they use?
  • Were they successful?

Who Were the Chartists?
  • They were a group of working men who believed
    that all men had the right to vote.
  • They drew up a charter- a list of how they
    thought Britain should be like.
  • Those who supported this group were known as
    Chartists.

  • The Peoples Charter
  • The vote for all adult men.
  • Secret Voting.
  • Dont need to own land to be an MP.
  • Wages for MPs.
  • Same sized constituencies.
  • Annual elections for parliament.

What Methods did they use?
  • Petition with almost 1.3 million names on it.
  • Used force to get the vote
  • Strikes

Why did the Chartists fail?
  • Government did not want to give the working class
    the vote.
  • Lost support because they were violent.
  • Leaders fought each other
  • Fake signatures!
  • Asked for too much.
  • Short of money.

    Design a poster to publicise who you are and to
    encourage people to support you.
  • Use the information on p.23-24 of the unit to
    help you.
