Energy Used in a Day.
  • What do we really mean when we say we use
    energy?
  • The objective of this activity is to make
    students aware that they do not use energy but
    rather transform it into forms needed to meet
    their needs.

  • This activity is aligned with the following
    Arkansas State 7th Grade Science Content
    Standards
  • PS.7.7.1- Identify natural resources used for
    energy needs
  • PS.7.7.2- Describe alternatives to the use of
    fossil fuels
  • PS.7.7.4- Investigate alternative energy sources

The Activity
  • The students brainstorm basic daily activities
    and determine the external source of the energy
    and how that energy is transformed.
  • Students then discuss which of these activities
    use fossil fuels as a source
  • Then, students will pick appliances that they use
    regularly from a given list that provides the
    power ratings for each appliance.
  • Then, students calculate the amount of energy
    they use each day and compare it to the amount
    of energy they consume (See Power of a Student
    lab)

Energy in an Electric Circuit Game
  • This game demonstrates for students the following
    principles of electricity
  • Direction of the flow of energy in a circuit
  • Energy transferred with a conductor to a bulb
  • Electrons continuously carry energy in a closed
    circuit

  • PS.7.8.1- Construct open and closed electrical
    circuits
  • PS.7.8.2- Describe and diagram open and closed
    series and parallel circuits

  • This could easily be used as either a pre-lab
    leading into further discussion or as an
    inquiry-based lesson.

  • Energy in an Electric Circuit Game
  • As an introductory activity to open and closed
    circuits
  • This is a pre-lab type game designed to engage
    students and get them thinking about electricity
    and how currents work.
  • We have made some adaptations.
