Embedded Librarian - sample

  • I am doing my business plans on a
microbrewery, do we have any beer specific or
brewery specific periodicals? I was searching
through the database and I could only find ones
on restaurants, but not specifically for brew
pubs. One that comes to my mind is "Beer
Advocate. Thank you for your help. John.
  • On 11/3/2009 at 1016 PM, Williams, Helene wrote
  • Hi, John - when you say "database," do you
mean the library catalog? Or the periodicals
collection listing? What may be of more use here
is to try to locate specific articles about
breweries, and those could be in magazines and
journals that aren't specifically related to beer
production (e.g. there might be articles in those
restaurant magazines). So do some searching on
your topic in research databases I'd suggest
starting with either ABI/Inform or Academic
    Search Complete.
  • For everyone in the class there's a subject
guide to business plan research available on the
    UW Libraries site, at http//guides.lib.washington
    .edu/content.php?pid63698sid470091 Many of the
links off this guide are to free sites (e.g. you
don't  need a UW ID to log on).

Independent Learning and Discussion - sample
  • I think this is very useful personally. I love
the fact that I'm able to translate Farsi/Persian
poetry. Even though I know it is very difficult
to translate poetry, the fact that I can get the
general meaning of it makes me happy. It is
also a useful tool for my Spanish class, I'm very
happy that I learned how to do this because the
other translating tool I have been using is very
    off.
  • Business wise I see this is useful in the sense
of being able to translate text at your
fingertips versus finding someone and waiting for
them to translate it for you. It saves time, and
it makes things more fast and efficient in my
opinion. I love technology even more now that
I've found out how to use this.

Interactive Activities - samples
  • I think that this is a great idea. The fact that
the business will be open on Saturdays will
easily set you apart from your competitors. So
many people would benefit from having the extra
day of operation. I think that some sort of
"medical" staff on board might need to be taken
    into consideration for opening costs.
  • I LOVE your idea for your proposed hours.  I
have friend who has a child in child care and she
is always rushing to pick up her daughter because
she has to be picked up by 545 pm everyday.  Her
and her ex boyfriend, who have shared custody,
have to also work schedules to fit their shared
custody days as well as the daycare's schedule.
To me it seems very inconvenient and I don't
understand why more daycares don't have better
hours!  Your idea would be very popular and
    profitable with the right location.

Unrelated but Feeling Good
  • The best thing I learned would have to be
the Access chapter. The job I work uses Access so
much to keep track of survey records and survey
results. Just this afternoon at work there was a
problem with running the query on turned in
surveys. I get surveys mailed to me then I enter
them into Access and it puts the data like survey
ID and date turned in into an Access Database and
each day I run a daily report on how many were
    turned in.
  • There is usual a conditional query that asks
me to enter the date and it pulls up all the
surveys for that date, today the query wasn't
asking me the date and that was because the
condition for the date was entered as 11/30/09
and it should have been Date so that way it
would allow me to type in the date and pull that
    specific days surveys up.
  • I brought this to the attention of the
project manager and told her that I could fix it,
because of what we had just learned. It felt good
to know that this class has helped me become a
    more knowledgeable employee.
