1
Choosing Health in Salford
2
How healthy is Salford?
  • Health in Salford is getting better
  • Life expectancy going up, cancers etc going down
  • However, much more slowly in Salford than England
    as a whole
  • People in Salford still die at a younger age and
suffer from a greater number of illnesses in
Salford than in England as a whole
  • Within Salford, people in the east of the city
have worse health than the west

3
Why?
4
Smoking
  • One in five of all deaths in Salford each year
    are smoking related
  • Half of smokers will die at a younger age than
    normal due to smoking
  • More than one in three people in Salford smokes
  • This is many more than in England as a whole
  • The age at which people die is therefore much
    younger

5
Smoking the good news
  • Fewer people smoke now than ever before
  • Every week, lots of people in Salford give up
smoking through the Stop Smoking Service or on
    their own
  • The health benefits of giving up smoking are felt
    at any age
  • Its never too late to give up smoking

6
Obesity
  • As a nation, we are larger than ever before
  • 23 of the population are classed as obese
  • In Salford, 30,000 adults are obese
  • 140,000 adults are overweight
  • Cause diabetes, heart disease, some cancers
  • Obesity robs us of a decade of life
  • Many children will die before their parents

7
Any good news?
  • Now on the national agenda as a key issue
  • Locally we are taking this seriously
  • Strategy being developed to tackle the issue
  • Food and physical activity workers have joined
together to form the Food and Physical Activity
    Partnership
  • Still a huge public health issue
  • Rates going up every year

8
Why are we getting larger?
9
Energy in, energy out
  • The number of calories we consume (energy in)
    has gone up
  • Our diets are now high in calories (plus
saturated fat, sugar and salt) and low in fruit,
    veg and fibre
  • The amount of energy we expend (Energy out) has
    gone down
  • We dont do enough exercise to burn the calories
    off

10
Why?
11
Energy in
  • Decline of cooking skills
  • Rise of fast food restaurants
  • Cheapness of ready meals/takeaway options
  • Food labelling confusing

12
Energy out

  • Rise of home based entertainment ie computer
