Introduction
3
Pollination
  • Flowering plants use the wind, insects, bats,
birds and mammals to transfer pollen from the
male (stamen) part of the flower to the female
    (stigma) part of the flower.
  • When bees and butterflies gather, pollen sticks
to their bodies. As they move from flower to
flower, they may brush against the pistils.

Read pp. A19-A20
4
The parts of a Flower
  • Sepals protect the bud until it opens.
  • Petals attract insects.
  • Stamens make pollen.
  • Ovaries grow into fruits which contain the seeds.

5
Stamen (male)
  • Anther pollen grains grow in the anther.
  • When the grains are fully grown, the anther
    splits open.

6
Pistil (female)
  • Stigma
  • Style
  • Ovaries
  • Ovules (eggs)

  • Bring your book home!

10
More About Pollination
  • A flower is pollinated when a pollen grain lands
    on its stigma.
  • Each ovary grows into a fruit which contains the
    seeds.

11
Answer the following Questions in your Notebook
  • What is pollination?
  • How do insects aide pollination?
  • Describe the relationship of the pistil, ovary,
    and ovules in a flower.

12
Seed dispersal
  • Seeds are dispersed in many different ways
  • Wind
  • Explosion
  • Water
  • Animals
  • Birds
  • Scatter
  • Man

13
Wind pollination
  • Some flowers, such as grasses, do not have
brightly coloured petals and nectar to attract
    insects.
  • They do have stamens and carpels.
  • These flowers are pollinated by the wind.

14
Seeds and Fruits
  • Read pp. A22 A23
  • Answer the following questions in your notebook.
  • What is an embryo?
  • Give an example of a monocot seed and a dicot
    seed?

15
In Class Work
  • Complete the plant Life Cycle worksheet and turn
it in when you are finished.
