• Loess- fine dusty soil brought by desert winds
  deposited by rivers in floods.
• South China warm rainy rice / North China cool
  dry wheat
• Surrounded by mountains, deserts, plateaus that
  provide protection that allows culture to grow.
• Most people were farmers who live work the land
  of a rich landowner.
• Most live in small villages.
• Crops grown given to Emperor landowner as a
  tax/payment, they get to keep what is left.
