- Follow the GMMP Monitoring Methodology Guides
- Monitoring involves
- Quantitative Analysis the numbers of women and
men in the world's news, the types of story in
which they are found, the roles they play in the
news. - Qualitative Analysis A detailed study of some
news stories, to illustrate basic patterns in the
reporting. This analysis will be done by the
national and regional coordinators. But we need
every individual monitor to help identify
suitable stories.

- Which media to monitor and how to select them
- National media
- Most important by circulation or reputation
- Try to reflect balance and diversity across
ownership, political views, audience, language,
geography, - Accessibility must be able to receive it.
- Look at the listing of GMMP media density bands
to see how many newspapers, radio, television and
where applicable, online news sites and twitter
feeds should be monitored in your country.
4What to code - Print
- 12 to 14 Main stories news only!
- If story starts on main news and is continued
elsewhere code all of it - Code all items on main page, then move on
- Code images the same as you would another story
- What NOT to code
- Editorials, commentaries, letters to editor
- Story listings
- Jokes and cartoons
- Weather reports
- Advertising

- Main news only!
- Full news bulletin include all types of news,
local, national, international. etc - Sports and weather where part of the news
- Only one from each station

- Introductions or headlines sections
- Scrolling news text

- Documentaries, entertainment programmes

- Major national websites first!
- Then regional (in-country) or local sites
- News only sites.

- News aggregation sites such as Google News,

- Twitter feeds that clearly belong to national
(and if necessary, local) media houses. - Twitter feeds concerned with news only.
- Feeds that reflect diversity and balance.

- Â Regional and international news media twitter
feeds such as _at_asianewsnetwork - Citizen bloggers and individuals accounts
- Wire services (e.g. _at_Reuters)
- Specialist services (e.g. _at_BNN)

8Golden Rules of Media Monitoring
- Rule1 Accuracy
- A few mistakes can tarnish the entire exercise
and damage its credibility
- Rule 2 Fill in the form.
- Do it to the best of your ability. Check it again
- For most there is an unsure option this is
bad but better than nothing.
- Rule 3 Rely on the story ONLY not what you might
know - Do NOT hunt for items about women or gender.
- Always refer to the GMMP methodology guide.

Rule 4 Back to Basics. When in doubt refer to
the GMMP methodology guide. If the answer is not
there, go to the overall objective to
monitor gender representation in the most
important news of the day. Work back from this
point. Communicate with us!
Rule 5 When it is, clear it is clear If the
answer is not clear from the outset and you find
yourself having serious doubts about it, it is
probably not clear. In which case err on the
side of caution.
