Title: What do you remember about the kingdom of protists?

1
What do you remember about the kingdom of
protists?
2
The year is 1846, and the country is Ireland.
The weather is cold and rainy, and the situation
is desperate. Disease has swept through the
potato fields. In just a few weeks, it destroyed
almost the entire crop. The Irish depend on
potatoes for food. Every day, hundreds of people
die of starvation. With no other hope for
survival, tens of thousands are fleeing their
country. Most head for the US. During the
hungry years of 1845-1852, Ireland lost 1/3 of
its population. 2million people left the
country. 1 million people died.
3
What was the cause of all this death and
devastation?
  • Water Mold!

5
Protista
  • The Protista kingdom was created b/c Euglena were
    discovered.

6
Protista Kingdom
  • Not plantsnot animals
  • Most are single-celled (some muliti-celled).
  • Evolved from ancient bacteria 2 billion years
    ago.
  • Ex. Algae, euglena, paramecium, giant kelp

7
What are some different types of protists?
  • Fungus-like protists
  • Animal-like protists
  • Plant-like protists

8
Fungus-like
  • Secrete digestive juices into the food source
    then absorb the nutrients.
  • Decomposer
  • Ex. Slime mold, water mold

9
Slime Mold
  • Slime
  • Single-celled except during times of environ.
Stress they come together with many nuclei and 1
    cytoplasm.
  • Grow when moist outside they grow sporangia with
    spores inside!

10
Water Mold
  • Live in water, moist soil, or organisms.
  • Parasites and decomposers.
  • Cause late blight in potatoes and attacks
    grapes.

See pg. 246 Fig. 4
11
Plant-like
  • Producers
  • Have chlorophyll
  • Most multi-cellular live in water as seaweed or
    kelp.
  • phytoplankton
  • Ex. Red, Brown, Green Algae,
  • diatoms, dinoflagellates,
  • and euglenoids.

12
Red Algae
  • Chlorophyll and red pigment
  • Live in tropical marine waters
  • Can grow as much as 260m below surface.

13
Brown Algae
  • Have chlorophyll and yellow-brown pigment.
  • Found in cool climates.
  • Form large floating beds on the surface
  • Grow 60m in 1 season.

14
Green Algae
  • Made of chlorophyll
  • Found in water, moist soil, melting snow, tree
    trunks, in other organisms.
  • Live in colonies called Volvox.

15
Diatoms
  • Found in water
  • Are phytoplankton
  • Cell walls contain cellulose and silica
    (glass-like substance)
  • Has two part shells that are used in silver
    polish, toothpaste, filters, and insulation.

16
Dinoflagelates
  • Are producers, consumers, decomposers, and
    parasites
  • Can produce strong poison which are eaten by
    shellfish.
  • Ex. Red tide.

17
Euglenoids
  • Are both producers and consumers.
  • Has a 2 flagella

18
HomeworkCompare and contrast Plantlike protists
with Funguslike protists. Make sure to list
examples too!
