5Francisco Pizarro and Hernando Cortes were
explorers from Spain. They traveled to Latin
America to claim land and discover new things
such as gold and trading materials. In South
America, Pissarro fought the Incas and their
king, Atahualpa. In Mexico, Cortes battled the
Aztec king Montezuma. The Spanish explorers had
new weapons such as the cannon, armor and horses.
In addition, they brought diseases such as small
pox that killed many natives. Because of their
weapons of war and native allies who fought with
them in battle, the explorers won new lands and
claimed Peru and Mexico for the country of Spain.

9Using your vocabulary sheet, identify and
summarize in writing a human characteristic of
Latin America.
10Identify and summarize the human characteristics
of Latin America.
The countries of Latin America have a variety of
language groups and ethnicities, but are united
by a common religion. Within the countries the
people may speak French, Portuguese or Spanish.
The variety of languages is due to the settling
of people groups when explorers were sent into
the new world. In Brazil they speak Portuguese
because explorers from the country of Portugal
settled there. Not only are there language
groups, but ethnicity varies as well. In Latin
America you will find Indigenous (natives),
Mullatos (African European) and Meztizo
(native European) groups. The one factor that
joins all the languages and people groups
together is their religion, which is primarily
Roman Catholic.
