What is the United Faculty of Florida?
  • A professional organization of, by, and for
    faculty in Florida higher education
  • A democratic, member-supported, volunteer-driven
voice for faculty at FSU and statewide
  • Your bargaining agent for salary, benefits,
academic freedom, tenure, promotion, due process,
    sabbaticals, etc.
  • See web site (www.uff-fsu.org)

3
Why Do Faculty Need UFF?
  • Because no one else speaks independently for FSU
faculty, and faculty should have a voice
  • Because, to cite one example, the June, 2004 FSU
Board of Trustees meeting agenda included
  • Student Government Association 5 minutes
  • Faculty Senate 5 minutes
  • Business group touting the view of universities
as mass-production degree machines and urging
shifts of public funds to private colleges 45
    minutes!

Who Supports UFF?
  • Hundreds of UFF members at FSU include some of
    FSUs most distinguished faculty, scholars
dedicated to their fields and to making FSU
    better
  • Why does UFF represent FSU faculty?
  • Short answer Representation Election (October,
    2003)

  • No representation 33

What Else?
  • You dont get what you deserve, you get what you
    negotiate
  • UFF-FSU faculty team just completed negotiations
    for 2006-07 re-openers (see flyer)
  • Were making progress, but theres more to do
  • Salaries that motivate and retain good faculty
  • Strengthen the core of what it means to be a real
    university including faculty autonomy,
    collegial governance, and academic freedom
    e.g., against well-intended but ill-considered
    accountability initiatives

8

    faculty voice at FSU.
  • That means a better FSU
