DoA PRESENTATION ON THE ALLOCATION OF FUNDS FOR
CHILDREN, YOUTH DISABLED PERSONS
  • The department of Agriculture does not have a
    centralized budget for these programmes however
    various Directorates have made some significant
    contribution to this aspect.
  • 1. Nature of Activities/Programme
  • 1.1 Pilot Project on career Awareness on
    Agriculture targeting schools in KwaZulu Natal
    and Northern Cape.
  • 1.2 External Bursary Scheme for Scarce Skills in
    Agriculture.
  • 1.3 Experiential and Internship Programme.
  • 1.4 Entrepreneurial Development Programme.

2. Allocation
  • 2.1 Pilot Project on Career Awareness.
  • Learners with high academic potential are granted
    secondary school bursaries to the tune of R432
    000 a year.
  • 2.2 External Bursary Scheme
  • A sum of R5.3 million is allocated to University
    and College students each year. To date about 114
    students are beneficiaries of the DoA external
    bursary scheme.
  • 3.3 Experiential and Internship
  • In 2003/2004, 93 interns were taken while in
    2004/2005 138 interns were placed in different
    Directorates. For 2005/2006 it is estimated that
    160 interns will be selected. The internship cost
    DoA about R3 200 per intern on interns
    allowances each month. An additional R1.5 million
    has been set aside each year for the training of
    the interns. The profile of interns is 100 black
    and a minimum 15 out of interns expected to be
    selected for 2005/006 will be disabled.

2.4 Entrepreneurial Development Program
  • About 25 unemployed graduates preferable those
    interested in self employment are selected each
    year to register for University of Stellenbosch
    Business School Agri Industry Development
    Programme (AIDP) on black release basis. The 25
    interns attached to Agri Businesses under the
    guidance of a mentor. To date those interns have
    been placed in Agribusinesses like SENWES, AFGRI,
    Pioneer Foods, Wes KAAP AGRI etc. An amount of
    R2million is invested in this programme each
    year.

3. Expected budget for 2006
  • Pilot Project Career Awareness R500 000
  • External Bursary Scheme R5.3 million
  • Experiential and Internship R6.6 million
  • Entrepreneurial Development Programme R2 million
  • Total R14.4 million

EDUPLANT PROGRAMME OF FOOD AND TREES FOR AFRICA
  • This Project involves all the Provinces in
    evaluating all their school with Junior LandCare
    Projects and then nominating the two best schools
    to attend the Eduplant Week in Johannesburg from
    the 26-29 September 2005. Thus 18 Junior LandCare
    schools were represented at the Eduplant Week by
    a teacher and one leaner sponsored by the
    Department of Agriculture.
  • Junior Care Prices for 2005
  • 18 certificates for participation information
    packs
  • 9 Provincial Trophies with Medals (the two
    Provincial school compete with each other or the
    school that has done better than other in their
    province becomes the winner of the province.
  • National Trophy Medal for the best emerging
    school in LandCare plus a hamper of garden tools
    (Fork, Spade, Handhoe, hark, knapsack sprayer)
    worth R600,00.
  • Second prize One A2 A3 Aluminium Framed
    LandCare NoCare Posters
  • Third prize A2 LandCare NoCare Aluminium Framed
    Poster.

FEMALE FARMER OF THE YEAR
  • The project is being done by the Provinces
  • This competition normally takes place during the
    Women's Month in August of every year.
  • Last year there were two young vibrant females
    who took part in the competition and each won an
    amount of R15000,00 as a price.
  • A mentoring programm for them has been developed
    and they are working closely Provinces.

  • Job creation sustainable employment
  • Capacity building development
  • Rural development in agriculture
  • Access to finance
  • First to lease land and then effect purchase of
    property within two years.
