Monroe Doctrine

• President Monroe warns Europeans to stay out of

• we promised to stay out of the affairs of Europe

Indian Removal Act

• allowed Federal Government to force Native
  Americans west
• Americans felt it was necessary to western
  expansion
• led to Trail of Tears (about ¼ of Cherokee
  population died)

Mexican-American War

• U.S. wins war gains land
• U.S. pays Mexico 15 million for California,
  Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, most of Arizona, and
  parts of Colorado Wyoming

Divisions Between the North South

• Norths economy is diverse (trade, agriculture,
  industry)
• Souths economy is totally dependent upon
  farming (cotton, tobacco, sugar, rice)

Economics

• most Northern states outlawed slavery
• very few African-Americans living in North
• Slaves made up more than 50 of population in
  South
• Slaves produced 75 of cotton
