• Rene Magritte was born in Belgium in 1898 and
  attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
• He went to Paris for a short time and worked with
  the surrealists.
• He studied philosophy and made a science of
  thinking.

• Although his work was considered outrageous, he
  lived a conventional lifestyle.
• He spent his life painting and living quietly in
  Brussels.
• He and his wife were married for 45 years until
  his death in 1967.

• Many of his works contain what seem like jokes.
• He liked the mystery, and he wanted people to
  think about what they were seeing.

• He painted normal things not in their normal
  places alongside other normal things where they
  would not normally be, hoping people would look
  at them as if seeing them for the first time.

• Surreal
• Having the intense irrational reality of a dream.
  Surrealist artists produce fantastic or
  incongruous imagery or effects by using unnatural
  juxtapositions and combinations.

• We must not fear daylight just because it almost
  always illuminates a miserable world
• The mind loves the unknown. It loves images
  whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of
  the mind itself is unknown.
• If the dream is a translation of waking life,
  waking life is also a translation of the dream.
