Enterprise Challenge
  • What makes a business a responsible and
    sustainable business?

2
  • Introduction
  • This lesson will help you to understand what it
means to be a responsible and sustainable
    business.
  • You will discuss how businesses can choose to
    behave responsibly or irresponsibly, sustainably
or unsustainably and the impact this has on you,
your family, society and the planet.
  • The ethical business element of the competition
will consist of this presentation, some games and
a case study that you need to read and take a
multiple choice assessment in. You can only take
    the assessment once.

3
  • Overall Objective
  • By the end of this presentation you should better
understand what is meant by the term a
    responsible and sustainable business.
  • You should also understand that the economic
success of a business does not depend solely on
maximizing profit in the short term. Longer term
    considerations such as environmental protection,
social responsibility towards workers and the
interests of consumers are also relevant.

4
  • What does a business do?
  • Pollution
  • Waste
  • Human rights
  • Inequalities

  • Being a Responsible Business
  • Being a Responsible Business is about improving a
  • companys impact on society and the environment
  • through its operations, products and services and
  • through its interaction with its key
    stakeholders.
  • Who are a companys stakeholders?

6
  • What is a Stakeholder?

Stakeholders are those who either affect, or are
affected by an organisation and its activities.
7
  • Sustainability
  • Without the support of your stakeholders
(including the environment) a business wont be
    sustainable
  • Sustainable development means meeting the needs
of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • Hands Up! If you think that most businesses
  • behave sustainably.

8
  • The Fishing Game

9
  • What should a business be responsible for?
  • If you were in charge of a business would you
try and reduce the negative social and
    environmental impacts?
  • Hands up if you would try and reduce the amount
    of waste your business produced
  • Hands up if you would try to ensure that all of
your suppliers did not use child labour
  • If you only had enough money to do one of these
    which would you do?
  • Would you do both even if it meant that your
    company was less
  • profitable this year and could not give
    you a pay rise?

10
  • Summary
  • All businesses have social and environmental
impacts, they can be negative or positive.
  • Businesses face choices around responsibility and
sustainability, these choices affect us all.
  • If a business is to survive it needs to consider
more than its short term profits. It needs to
think about its long term sustainability and look
after its social and environmental stakeholders.

11
  • Two Case Studies
