Two different methodological approaches
The first approach is based on the definition of
ICT activities Industrial classes of the 3rd
revision of the International Standard Industrial
Classification
The second approach is based on the definition of
ICT products Prodcom (98) classification based on
the work of the Nordic working group on
Information Society Statistics

ICT PRODUCTS DEFINITION
The classification includes 222 commodities,
clustered in six categories

1. Telecommunications equipment
2. Consumer electronics
3. Computers
4. Electronic components
5. Office machinery
6. Instruments and equipment for detecting,
   measuring, checking and controlling physical
   phenomena or processes

The data sources
ASIA database ISTAT micro files on all active
enterprises
COE database ISTAT micro files on international
trade
Each method implies a different use of
statistical information taken from the COE
database. According to the first method to define
ICT sector we use statistical information grouped
by individual economic traders, while to define
ICT products we use statistical information
referred to all goods classified by the CN8
(Combined Nomenclature) code and traded by
individual economic traders
