Title: Lab: Properties of Matter

1
Lab Properties of Matter
  • Instructions You will use the definitions
provided here to complete the lab successfully.
  • Purpose To better understand how we classify
matter and the properties and processes of
    changing matter.
  • Note There is a short Lab Quiz which will be
given out at the end of the period to assess your
    understanding.

Definitions Needed for Lab
SUSPENSION When the particles of a substance
are mixed with a fluid but the particles do NOT
dissolve. The particles will settle over time
due to gravitys net influence. SOLUTION A
homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
where the solvent dissolves the solute. Usually
thought of as a solid dissolved in a liquid, but
can be in any state. This is the best mixed of
all mixtures. COLLOID Usually relatively large
particles of a substance that are mixed in
another substance, but the particles will NOT
settle. Note You can classify mixtures as one
of these 3 based on the size of its largest
particles

HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE Mixture where the
particles can be told apart from one another as
obviously different substances. HOMOGENEOUS
MIXTURE Mixture where the particles are so well
mixed that you cannot visually observe that there
are different substances present. ELEMENT The
simplest form of pure substance. It cannot be
separated into simpler substances by a chemical
change. Something made up of only one type of
atom would be called elemental (following the
rules of this definition). COMPOUND A substance
that is made up of two or more elements
chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
