• Fought in Vietnam with honor

• Believed in less government, states rights, and a
  strong military
• Forgo détente and pursued a military buildup
  against the USSR also got Saudi Arabia to
  produce more oil, driving oil prices down
  Russia lost money selling oil
• Also attacked them ideologically
