1
Theatre Safety and Tools
2
Theatre Safety
  • Make a list of 5 reasons that theatre safety is
    important.
  • Think past you can die!

3
Main Causes of Accidents
  • Not knowing what should be done
  • Not using tools properly
  • Using bad or faulty equipment
  • Carelessness
  • Taking unnecessary risks
  • Being in a hurry

4
Fire Safety
  • For a fire to exist these three elements must
    exist

Fuel
Heat
Oxygen
Fuel is not just gasoline it is what is burning
5
Classes of Fires
  • Fires are classified into several categories.

6
Class A Fires
  • Ordinary Combustibles
  • Cloth, Paper, Trash
  • Anything that turns into ash when burned

7
Class B Fires

10
Fire Extinguishers
  • Fire extinguishers work by removing one item of
    the fire triangle.
  • They are useful for small fires. A small fire is
about the size of a kitchen garbage can.

11
Fire Extinguisher Video
  • Watch the video and answer the questions on the
    worksheet.

12
LDHS Theatre Fire Extinguisher Locations
  • In the small space between the shop and black box
  • Outside the black box door
  • Green Room
  • Booth

13
Other Fire Safety Devices
  • Fire Sprinklers
  • Fire Alarms
  • Fire Curtains
  • Flameproofing
  • Fire Curtain
  • Smoke Vents

14
Fire Sprinklers
  • Small glass tube that is filled with a red liquid
  • When the liquid is heated it will expand and
    break the glass.
  • Thus releasing the water that is stored in the
    sprinkler lines
  • Has nothing to do with smoke only heat

15
Fire Alarms
  • Pull on the wall
  • When activated the alarm alerts the fire
department and all in the buidling

16
Flame Proofing
  • Nothing is fire proof. At a certain temperature
    everything will burn.
  • In flame proofing a chemical is applied to the
soft goods so they will resist an open flame.
  • This is the main reason we do not touch the soft
    goods.

17
Fire Curtain
  • Large drop directly behind the proscenium arch
  • Once was made from asbestos. Now made from
    fiberglass.
  • Has 3 main functions
  • Inhibit smoke from coming into the audience
  • Inhibit the fire from spreading into the house
  • Psychological - if the audience cant see the fire
then they dont know how big it is getting

18
Smoke Vents
  • Located in the ceiling of the Performance Hall.
  • When there is a fire they can be opened to feed
    the fire.
  • The added oxygen will help the fire from
spreading since it will not run out of oxygen.

Exits
  • Most people will try to exit the same way they
    entered.
  • Be aware of the possible exits (windows are
    possible exits)
  • DO NOT GO BACK IN THE BUILDING THAT IS ON FIRE.
(Fun Fact the only fatality in Plano last year
was due to a man going back into a burning house
for his cell phoneyour phone can be replaced,
    but you cannot!)
