The Federal System

• After the Revolution, many
• Americans were afraid of giving the national
  government too much power
• As a result, the Articles of Confederation was
  created
• The national government was weak, and the states
  had most of the power
• The Constitution was written to strengthen the
  national government

• The Constitution states specific powers and
  responsibilities assigned to the Federal
  (national) government
• The 10th Amendment states that powers not given
  the federal government go to the states
• Local governments are responsible to cities and
  towns
• State and local laws may not break federal laws
  (Article VI- Supremacy Clause)
